discerningword on Jun 29, 2010

A toothy-grinned dog icon for my shredder app... lol. I can see that working.

Actually, some years back, my parents' dog, Effie, was a tissue-shredder. Effie loved to be taken along for family rides in the car... and would be upset when my parents went out together on a Saturday and left her alone.

Sometimes, my parents would come home and find shredded tissues all over the living room. It was Effie... taking out her frustration by pulling disposable tissues out, one by one, from a tissue box she had found somewhere in the house, and, lol, tearing them to bits. As soon as she heard the sound of the car pulling into the driveway, though, Effie would hide... because she knew she had been a bad girl.

When my parents walked in and saw that it had "snowed" inside (thanks to Effie), they had to coax her out of her hiding place. Her abjectly downcast eyes and and body language bespoke of more than a simple admittance of guilt. She looked so very sorry that my mom would only shake her head and say softly, with great disappointment in her voice, "Oh, Effie, WHAT have you done?" And Effie would put her paw over her eyes.

On those occasions, there was such sadness and remorse in Effie's heart, especially in disappointing my mom. We really had to keep from laughing in the dog's presence. Oh, my, though, how we laughed later, after the mess was cleaned up. It was worth the occasional box of tissues.

PS: Thanks for accepting the gold!

Hi, my friend! Hope you are doing better!

As per your suggestion, I sent a gold your way. Thanks for asking!

Hope you still have tokens to accept a little bit of Christmas in June. Who says you can't enjoy a candy cane in summer?

I've been having fun redecorating my desktop for the summer. I found a very realistic wallpaper of turquoise and green water with light shimmers and swells and swirls in it. I've been finding various marine-themed icons to replace a lot of my desktop icons. They are of different styles, but I don't care. I already was using the shark from Oslo Oceanic for my shredder app... but now, with this wallpaper, the open-jawed shark looks like he's really coming up out of the ocean.

My Personal Data folder has a mermaid. I've used the Acapulco System folder icon for my miscellaneous folder (which I currently am titling "The Fishnet"). That icon will do until I find a folder draped with a fishnet (I'll probably have to make one). I'm adapting a note-in-a-bottle for my Notepad. My C Drive has a branching coral icon. My archival Drive D has an oyster with a pearl. There is a conch shell for My Music. Snorkeling gear for my IrfanView image viewer. A school of colorful tropical fish for My Graphic Pix folder. A beautiful scallop shell for My Documents. And a sailboat for Internet Explorer (this won out over a funky submarine icon).

Still looking for a good Firefox icon (maybe a bikini-clad fox clutching an Earth-like beachball, lol?). And Recycle Bin icons, ooooh.... if I only can find a pelican with beak open/empty for an empty Recycle Bin, and a pelican with beak closed and throat pouch full for the full Recycle Bin icon!

Some of the desktop icons I've been using for a while I shall keep using because I really like them, even though they don't go necessarily with the new water theme. One icon that I use for easy access to my Setups and Zips folder is a jaunty cartoon of a baby blue and white Volkswagen bus. (Hey, who knew a VW would float?!!) And my Windows Explorer icon is a little orange cat sitting in window with a night view of moon and stars. I think I'll try making an icon similar to that... but have the cat sitting at a porthole! I use another cat icon for My Computer on the desktop-- a light blue square featuring a fat black cat with a computer mouse triumphantly dangling from his smiling mouth.

The icon I have for my Computer Maintenance folder is not part of my ocean theme, but a beehive with bees buzzing around it, and my
Program Files folder shortcut has a symmetrical honeycomb icon- with seven, sealed, hexagonal chambers (very recognizable). Actually, I have several bee-themed icons that are very nice, including an Internet Explorer "e" icon in golden yellow with a honeybee perched across it. I haven't found a desktop wallpaper I like enough yet to make a bee and flower theme succeed for a summer desktop.

In the meantime, I'm loving this ocean theme. I'm testing some new software, so when I'm sure which apps will have shortcuts staying on the desktop, maybe I'll be able to replace their standard icons with some that go with my theme. I think there may be something usable from Shanghai UV for both the ocean and bee theme. But I'm still looking out for some simple icons relating to the ocean theme, beach items, marine creatures, ships, etc., in 32x32 pixel. Things that are distinct, colorful, and a little different. I'd especially like to get a little island with a palm tree for my AOL icon, the head of bearded Neptune with trident (for the folder I keep for my bearded husband, lol), a smiling manta ray for my 3 1/2 Floppy A Drive, the head of a dog holding a Frisbee in his mouth (for my Games folder), and a lifeguard station/chair (for my Security Suite). (NOTE: If you have... or if anyone reading this... has one of these to share... or another type that would work with my ocean... or with my bee theme, would you kindly leave a post for me on my page?)

Yesman, I guess I get carried away, but it is one fun way to use some of the icons I collect. Do YOU use any of your icon collection for your desktop icons?

Oh, before I forget... Some of the new software I've acquired from:

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com

has been superb. If you haven't been to the site, it's helpful to check it each day in case the pro-version software they are giving away might be of use to you. I acquired the AllMyBooks library software for free, also a top-notch process manager called Process Lasso for free (an excellent, excellent app well worth buying), and several other pieces of software that were offered free through their Giveaway of the Day. The featured giveaway is available for 24 hours, and in that time one must install and activate it before the time is up if you choose to download it.

Getting some pro, full-featured software here for FREE is better than paying full price for the same pro version of the software, or using a "light" version without full functionality or extended features. Of course, many times, the software of the day at this site is nothing I really want, or sometimes there is a better piece of freeware or a highly rated and dependable app one might rather purchase... but sometimes the giveaway is a real winner, and I grab it fast. I love delving through the comments others post, too, regarding the "giveaway" of the day, and have found good info on comparable or better freeware, ideas/insight on the quirks and benefits of the featured software, tech help, and links to other beneficial sites. You might want to check this goodie out. :)

It's always nice to hear from you, yesman. So glad you stopped by my page!

Morning, I've still got 5 tokens to use, so any silver or lower set would be much appreciated.

discerningword on Feb 28, 2010

Woof, my dear! Cats or dogs, indeed. Don't know what people would answer if the "this or that" choice is between cats who don't stop talking or dogs who don't stop laughing. Do you?

WebbedIT on Feb 28, 2010

Thanks for set. Sent one of the few silver sets that I have that you don't have, no need to reject as I have a load of stamps. Wait until you have some tokens.

jojobear99 on Feb 23, 2010
