You download them to your computer and can change the way things look. Open an icon in preview and hit edit: copy then select something on your desktop, like a folder, press command I: select the little picture in the upper left hand corner of the window that pops up and press command V. Its image on your desktop should now change. You can get some cool Battlestar galactica icons, or a ton of other ones here (http://iconfactory.com/search/?q=battlestar+galactica)
