IconBuffet Site Search via Google
Added Later (via DeLorean) Instead of reading through the blog entry that spawned it, you could just skip straight ahead to my Google powered Iconbuffet Site Search. ;)
So, there's been some discussion about adding search features to the site to find older blog entries. (Not talking about searching for icons here.)
You can add "site:iconbuffet.com" to your Google search to limit results quite a bit. However, you can do even better by also adding "inurl:blogs" to your search.
For example, if all you care about is blog posts about Manhattan sets, a basic site search is pretty lame. You won't see your first blog until page 2. :(
However, adding "inurl:blogs" lets you read everything people are saying about the Manhattan sets.
And if you're stalking tamashii and want to know everything he's ever said about Manhattan, you can get a lot more specific with your site search by specifying a directory in the "site:" command.
Just some ideas for using Google to make your searching a little more about finding stuff than paging through a bunch of search results. :)
P.S. I swear I'm not stalking you tamashii, your name just came up a lot in connection to requests for site search features. ;)
Added I went ahead and put together a little one box for Google searching. I've added some bells and whistles, specifically a blog search and tag search. So go check it out: Iconbuffet Site Search

Yay, nice guide for people who likes google
tamashii on Jun 01, 2007
It probably came up because it is one of the features in the Feature Requests thread.
I have also included this thread under the GUIDES section of my Guides, FAQs, etc. thread. Thanks for this info.

Wow, awesome.

Holy cow that Googlette is sweet!
whoisgregg on Jun 04, 2007
Okay, I added a checkbox "Search Blogs only" to make it even easier to search.
I used Prototype to unobtrusively attach that feature, so it should have the same browser dependencies that IconBuffet itself has. (And if you want to turn off Javascript on my site, you'll still get a site search box.)
Let me know what you think. :)

And, hey, why not add a tag search too? :)
Here's another link to an Iconbuffet Site Search just in case you missed it in the main post.

For sure Google on IB is useful. So easy even a caveman can do it.
bjendrick on Jun 04, 2007
@whoisgregg: Very nicely done!
whoisgregg on Jun 04, 2007
Thanks bjendrick!
FYI, I didn't test this on any browsers other than Safari so hopefully it works and looks decent on other browsers. If anyone has design bugs or javascript bugs to report, feel free to and I'll fix them. Just let me know what browser you experienced the problem in. :)
FallenAngel on Jun 08, 2007
@whoisgregg: Yay! That's *nice*! (works fine on Firefox)
whoisgregg on Jun 11, 2007
Can anyone confirm that it is working in Windows IE? Just a quick "it looks broken" is enough for me to fire up my test environment to fix it or a quick "it looks good" will put my mind at ease. Thanks in advance! :)
robbyrice on Jun 11, 2007
well, the page comes up alright, however the word "iconbuffet" in the red bar at the top is in the middle instead of all the way to the left. There are also two textboxes as opposed to just one in FireFox. Finally, the two buttons (Google Search and I'm Feeling Lucky) seem to be disproportionately big. Anyway, that's what I am seeing in IE 7.

Impressive

Thanks everyone for your comments. I've had a couple hundred people using the search so I'm happy to keep providing the service and to update it with any new features you might like. Just whisper me or post to this thread. :)

So, yeah, anyone still using this? I've been AWOL for awhile... If there's interest I can make it A Little Betterâ„¢ than it is now. ;)
