IE6 doesn't render transparent pngs.

Very useful link Jaybee - thanks. Perfect timing in posting it as well! I was having the same issue using some IB pngs on a site and instead ended up using gifs, which were looking a little ragged around the edges because of the transparency - a nice little conditional comment later though and the pngs are looking every bit as lovely in IE as they do elsewhere!

Infact, I did some research on this issue and the potential JavaScript solutions, and I recently published my findings on my blog.
I agree that the best answer is .gifs for IE6, if your site stats show it's necessary to support IE6. In my article, I also wrote a tutorial for changing the .pngs into .gifs with the correct bg color.
I hope it helps.

Nice one Katie.

Thanks. I looked into the JS solutions after Mik's PNG In Practice question. If you take a look at the IB site, you can see that most of the images are .gifs. This is what causes the small halos around some images - take a look at Jan's recent deliveries. The AHS icon shows off the halo particularly well. ;)
(PS - I know the fancy headers on my page don't show in IE. Content is king, and it goes up first.)
Umm... Have I been looking at IB for too long?

Nah, there's no such thing where IB's concerned ;-)
Nice article Katie!

Most odd! I've just tried out that js method on a few of my pages, and on one of them it's having a very weird effect, and I've not worked out quite why yet. I'm getting a weird jumping effect when the page reloads (a bit like you can get with js rollovers that haven't got a pre-loader). Weird thing is though it's also messing up my floats as well. I've got a floated image further down the page that should be floated off to the left of a paragraph, but with the conditional comment in it refuses to float at all in IE and sits above the text - take it out though and it plays nice again - weird!
I've bee having a go at saving .pngs as .gifs though as Katie suggests (took a little while to figure out - I use PSP and tend not to use layers much) and that's working well though - seems the js is redundant after all! Thanks Katie! :-)

Alas, reality and my site stats still say I must provide SOME kind of support for IE6. But, really, ugly .PNGs don't make a site unusable. I'm sure we're all waiting for the day when IE6 goes the way of Netscape Navigator.

So tr00! I even wrote a poem about it once...
Get a better browser,
You know you really should,
Not Incompetent Explorer,
It really is no good.
It stuffs things up,
It gets it wrong,
It don't play by the rules,
It makes you wonder with all it's quirks
if it was designed by fools.
Get a better browser,
You know you really should,
A foxy one is far more nice
It comes with real cool tools.
Come from the dark side to the light,
a compliant one you should get,
with tons of added features to improve your life
it's a change you won't regret!
