I'M IN UR HOAMSKUL, GETTIN UR EDUKASHIN
Okay, so SmockLady's a homeschooling mom, and I'm a homeschooling dad and graduate (my parents jumped on the Christian homeschooling bandwagon back when James Dobson first started recommending it in the early '80s). Any other homeschoolers (teachers or students) around?
If so, go ahead and join our new guild: IB HOAMSKULIN! kthxbai
(EDITS: I don't know LOLspeak as well as I think I do.)

I love it! Oh, but have you haven't covered the social misfit malfunction of hoamskuling.

a proud homeschool graduate here :o). My parents (mostly my mom) homeschooled me and my two brothers from kindergarten right up through the end of high school. We never went to a "traditional" school (be it christian or public), however we were very active in our church and that is where we had most of our social interaction. I can honestly say that I never regretted my parents decision to homeschool me and I don't feel like I have missed out on anything important in life. My education (both in the classroom and out of it) has prepared me quite well to face the challenges of life.

Home schooling really isn't a big thing in the UK whereas I know loads of people in the US who do it. How odd, wonder why that is?
ZsaZsa on Jul 19, 2007
The schools are better in the UK.

@SmockLady: Why else would I create a homeschoolers-only guild (ghetto)? ;)
@robbyrice: Cool, man... I'll bet we could trade all sorts of stories (age-wise you're right between my two brothers).
Alright, I need to get back to my sensory-deprivation tank. This socialization is just too... ::shudder:: ...overwhelming! (LOL)

(LOL @ JBVisions and ZsaZsa!)

I was sort of home schooled, though not through choice. As a teenager I was ill and unable to attend school for almost 3 years, so ended up being taught at home for quite a while. Doing science experiments in the kitchen was kinda cool! <grin>

Wanna really have fun - in a geeky way? (Good lessons in logic, too).

@travisseitler - yeah, I visited your blog about a month or so ago and liked what I saw. I agree that we've probably got a lot of stories to share and quite a few that would be similar.
travisseitler on Jul 19, 2007
@ZsaZsa: Did I read that right? That article's almost a decade old? (C'mon, that's pre-"No-Child-Left-Behind"! The US must be ranking even lower these days!) ;)
robbyrice on Jul 19, 2007
@ travisseitler - yeah, you read that right, the article is from 1998. I think I would have to agree with you that the US might be ranking lower. Is it any wonder that the Bible teaches that a child's education is the parents responsibility? If the government wants to have so much control over the education of children, why don't they just outright raise them (which is practically what they are doing today).
ZsaZsa on Jul 19, 2007
You are right - twas a test to demonstrate the superiority of home-schooled over public-schooled!
ZsaZsa on Jul 19, 2007
@robbyrice Don't get me started! We are such negligent parents that we expect the schools to raise our children. Then when the kid does something heinous we march into the school and protect precious with a cadre of lawyers.
SmockLady on Jul 19, 2007
Oh, my stinkin' heck! (I stole that one)
You so don't want to get me started.
but take a look at this:
I hijacked a quote in our homeschool blog.

12 years under me belt as a HS parent - four more to go.
The standard naming convention for Iconbuffet groups is "IB Whatever". While IB HOAMSKULD is okay for HS students its not great for parents. I suggest "IB HOAMSKULIN" as it applies to both student and teacher.

@ ZsaZsa and SmockLady - well, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that pubic education isn't the best for kids :o)

@FallenAngel - "Doing science experiments in the kitchen"
The missus wasn't too happy when we dissected the eye ball on the breakfast table. It was fresh so what was the big deal?
And before anyone ask - there is no connection between the dissected eye ball and me eye patch.

@robbyrice - I don't think public school (or some private schools) are the best education for children, but I do tread carefully there. The system has changed so much since I was young. I think there are still some good school out there that are just staying under the radar. We live one block away from an elementary school that is very good. They don't "teach to the test"; they make sure the children are learning, really learning what they need - pushing them beyond the expecting grade level requirements. When they take the tests each year for the NCLB they are always way past the national averages and the scores just soar. since we homeschool we don't have to worry too much about which school district we live in, but I am so glad that we live so close to this school. It's a neighborhood school and there are many children in our neighborhood that my children play with. Also, we have a daughter with Cerebral Palsy (she had a stroke when she was four weeks old, quit breathing and had some body, brain damage). We don't have medical insurance (hubby's job doesn't provide it) and the only way she could get the physical and occupational therapy she needs is to go to public school, the one right down the street. She goes to regular classes, but during recess and PE gets her therapy.
Interestingly, they use many of the same curriculum we use (some of it just has a different label)
OK that was long, serious, and a bit heavy.
Now, back to the irregularly unscheduled OT please. I have a daughter turning 12 today - it's time to paaaarty!

@Jen: o noes!
@iqon: "IB HOAMSKULIN" does fit much better. I second the motion!

I'm homeschooled; this is my third year doing it and I'm probably going to do it for a fourth, too. ^_^
