Free Web Design! - newyorkobama.com

This message asking for free web design was posted to the Meetup.com newtech-1 group:

I'm a video producer and a volunteer for Obama for America in NYC. I feel we're in a historic moment, a time when we can help elect a leader who will bring fundamental change to Washington and to our national conversation. I'm developing an ambitious video website to help support the Obama campaign and I need your talent, expertise, and energy to get it done. I'm looking for a few engineers and a web designer to help in the next 10 days (it's very likely this race will last for many weeks after the February 5th primary). Experience with embedded web video, tags, and databases a plus. No pay; only credit, and the knowledge that you've helped to change our country for the better.

Email me at jacob@newyorkobama.com with your resume and availability and I will email you back with more project details.

Hmmm, why is it all these political groups always want FREE web design?

Do I get FREE White Russians?

Do I get FREE Rugs (you know to tie the room together)?

Do I ask for FREE Steak dinners at Outback?

Do I ask for FREE work on my car from a mechanic?

Do I get FREE education to learn all this stuff?

And this space monkey wants results in ten days!! Well guess what man, you should have planned on doing your site MONTHS ago. Not at the last minute. There is no such thing as free web design. We all got bills to pay!

Hmmmm methinks somebody needs to point out that a major requirement not mentioned is Section 508 experience.

I think this is one of those small time local guys not directly connected to Obama. But I could be wrong. I saw a lot of the South Florida political people show up at the tech meetups also looking for free web design, this guy has the same MO.

Do I ask for FREE work on my car from a mechanic?

You should go to a mechanic and ask him/her to repair your car for nothing. You will of course give them credit for the job and they can feel better knowing they got you back on the road. Seems reasonable ;)

Greetings All,

You know... I've been a programmer analyst and web developer for over a decade now, and the mentality demonstrated above has persistently asserted itself throughout my career. Fortunately, I've benefited from the mentorship of many fine managers, and this has provided me with the perfect schpiel to rattle off when confronted with such requests:

In business, in general, there are three qualities you can purchase:
 * You can have it done fast.
 * You can have it done well.
 * You can have it done cheap.

Unfortunately, you can only procure TWO of those qualities at any one time. e.g., if you want it done cheap and fast, you can't have it done well, or if you want it fast and well, you can't have it done cheap. It's a simple rule, it rarely fails to hold true, and it succinctly elucidates the truth behind the fantasy some folks come forward with.

   Tuesday on the island
   Not much goin' on
   The parties are all over
   They ended just past dawn

It's hump day on the island
And the lines have all gone dead
All the juicy news is history
   I guess everything's been said
