Pandora vs last.fm

Which do most of you prefer? I was a long time last.fm user, but have been really enjoying Pandora and how they mix my taste of music better.

What do you all use?

pandora rocks

terryapodaca on Oct 09, 2007

Yeah, and thanks to joshuasbones I can have the best of both worlds!

joshuasbones on Oct 09, 2007

That's right. I am awesome.

josie on Oct 09, 2007

Never heard of pandora actually... I'll give a look at it ;)

terryapodaca on Oct 10, 2007

I like the selection that Pandora provides vs that last.fm or even virb has selected based on my likes.

ehooton on Oct 10, 2007

That's awesome! My hubby is gonna flip when I show him that link!

romeomarquez on Oct 10, 2007

i first used pandora and then switched to last.fm
i actually like both....

Phate on Oct 11, 2007

Pandora is perfect - BUT only for americans. :'(

I'm from germany. A half year ago, they had to close the site for over nations because the goverments didn't allow to use pandora in these countries.

I'm realy - REALY - sad about this. I want to use it again - i don't give up hoping...

Last.FM is my alternitive for the time i can't use pandora

VINZ on Oct 11, 2007

have you heard about deezer ?

zelda013 on Oct 11, 2007

i used to love pandora too, i was sad when they closed international access... i hope they open it again ! maybe we could make a petition phate ! i used last for a while but i was a bit disappointed by it. maybe i should try again.

@ vinz : i haven't tried deezer yet, do you like it ?

Phate on Oct 11, 2007

@zelda013, i also thought about something like that. But i think - in germany - i have to go to the "GEZ". Thats our authority to take the money for the artists. A little bit complicated.

zelda013 on Oct 11, 2007

@ phate... ha ok... i thought it was because of american legislation or something like that. so i would have to go the sacem (french gez). very complicated. well... we can keep hoping....

anti on Oct 11, 2007

Dunno, I tried pandorafm on your recommendation, but I like the rather obscure numbers from LastFM, pandora seemed to play just the hits.

VINZ on Oct 12, 2007

@zelda013 i use deezer everyday. The catalog is huuuuuge. no limit, every record company. It's more like a playlist you create. If a title is unavailable, just send a request to add it.

zelda013 on Oct 12, 2007

@vinz, trying deezer right now. selection is ok so far, although already i discovered a few songs they don't have... but i regret they don't make any suggestions like pandora ; i discovered some really good music with them. it's good if i want to listen to a song i don't have, right away (unless that song is "god's comic" by elvis costello... or "veronica"... or almost all of the songs on spike... *sigh* i've been wanting to listen to spike for weeks), but for regular playlist itunes is easier (and no wait for buffering). but i suppose that depends if you work at home (where your music is) ! i'm waiting to see if they reply to my email about spike... cross your fingers !

@ anti the selection on pandora depends on what you put in your profile... i got a very good selection of a lot of bands i didn't know, but which were similar to other artists / songs i had in my references. try putting in some less-known / more unusual artists or songs and see what comes out. feeling nostalgic now for pandora... i miss clicking the little "thumbs up" everytime i hear a new song i like, so i will get more like it...

VINZ on Oct 12, 2007

there is the "smart playlist" option that let you discover similar artists. you can even upload in you playlist mp3 you want to listen.

zelda013 on Oct 12, 2007

haaaa, "smart playlist", i was wondering what that was... thanks, i will try it out.

terryapodaca on Oct 12, 2007

Yes, there are many options for Pandora that you have to snoop around and find. At first, I selected a Tool channel, and it played almost all of the most popular artists that sounds or that are in the same sound. Then, I found a setting that also throws in there a few of the lesser known bands, some up and coming bands, etc.

So, I get a nice mix of old and new, and sometimes a nice mix of music I haven't ever heard of.

i rather las.fm, i have met lots of artist of my taste and friends too than pandora, besides, pandora closed their access, for example i am from mexico and that is useless to me, so i say last.fm rules!

wallerdm Vip-micro on Jan 20, 2008

Yep, I'm back on Last FM now. Was really into Pandora until it found my IP to be from the UK :-( Virb has some pretty good artists too.

nae on Feb 12, 2008

I prefer last.fm. It has everything I need, it's open for everyone, has much nicer design and more intuitive site architecture :-)
