One Billion Bulbs
I have decided to join the One Billion Bulbs campaign after reading about it on a few other blogs. I think this is a great thing. After being a first time home buyer, as well as, it being a year now…I now know that there are many things a home owner can do to ease some financial burdens that come from owning a home. And let me tell you, with electricity already high, this one little thing can help. I’ve already changed about 15 bulbs in my home…and counting. How many have you changed?

I'm not really convinced that changing my bulbs is the way to go. There's too much conflicting information for me to buy into it just yet.
- NPR on toxic mercury.
- Treehugger reassures us that CFL bulbs are okay.
- BBC dispels some myths about CFL bulbs.
- Treehugger explains how the now commonly quoted $2000 cleanup price came about.
It appears that most sources report that CFL bulbs are a Good Thing(tm), but I'm not sold on 'em yet.

They seem appealing, but with the issues justG brought up, and the poor light you generally get I'm still a bit hesitant.

I've replaced almost every light in the house with some sort of energy efficient bulbs. All I lack now is the outside!

I've replaced as many as I can but the bulbs are too fat for some of my light fittings.

i've replaced about half -- the other half are now on dimmers

I've run into the lights not fitting dilemma. I went to a local hardware store, and found the same wattage lights in a much smaller bulb. Go check out one of your local stores and see if you can get a smaller bulb without reduces effectiveness.

In Oz the local councils give out free 6 packs of CFL bulbs and water saving shower heads (our drought situation is bad). I'm replacing them as old ones burn out.

@ Terry - Yep tried that. Problem is I have some very slim shades on some wall lights and the large plastic starter unit just won't allow us to seat the bulb. I've got what I believe is the smallest available. Might have to go LCD.... plus a torch.
