Virginia Tech Shootings in US
Anyone else hear about this? Up to 32 people were killed, making this the worst mass shooting in the history of the US.
Horrible what we humans do sometimes.

I heard about it a few hours ago - it's really shocking. Very sad.

Thoughts and Prayers go out to those families...tragic loss.

Just to clarify, it's the worst mass shooting on a school campus in US history. Still, it's very bad.
taario on Apr 16, 2007
From Wikipedia:
"It is the deadliest civilian shooting in American history, surpassing the Columbine High School massacre"
Doesn't matter if it's the worst shooting in history though, lots of people still lost their lives. =(

MSNBC claims the previous worst shooting was an incident in Killeen, TX.
I don't understand how the shooter managed to shoot in one location, get quite a ways across campus, and then go on a second spree.
tamashii on Apr 16, 2007
MSNBC is a bunch of n00bs, then. The worst was at the University of Texas in 1966. From the clock tower.
Guess they aren’t clear on which city UT is in. CNN has it right though.
cheiie on Apr 16, 2007
I am also confused by that - because that campus is NOT small - did you see the map!

Anyone see the amateur video of the police and the gunman exchanging fire? Creepy stuff. I keep on imagining people getting hit by those shots.

This is totally messed up. Very saddening. Very very saddening.
Sparkie on Apr 16, 2007
It's absolutely unbelievable. I heard that they were looking for a second gunman though - but the one who started the shooting was killed. So very sad.
taario on Apr 16, 2007
They seem to have confirmed 33 deaths. I'm not sure though yet. (watching it live on CNN)
I just want to know what the motive behind this was. I can't get to grips with why a person would do such a thing.
tamashii on Apr 16, 2007
Why do people eat guacamole? It’s best not to question these things. You’ll never get an answer and if you did, it would likely only produce more questions.
Stuff like this gets me down tremendously, so I try not to think about it beyond the immediate moment it happened. I’ll remember it, sure; but I basically push it back into the corners of my brain.

I understand, but how are people supposed to forget when their sons/daughters/sisters/brothers/etc got shot by some person at a place where they thought was safe?

This is just unbelievable.. terrible terrible. another article at Chicago Trib

Well, here we are having fun and somewhere theres always tragedy. Near us someone shot and killed a whole family and then lit their house on fire. And I practaly live in the sticks! Also last night on the news a man burned a familys house and killed 5 children from baby on up.
I think I might take my kids out and let them know how much I love them. Life is short.

Very sad news - my prayers are with the students, faculty, and their families

And I don't want to. The day I can *understand* their motivation, make any sort of sense out of it, is the day I question my own humanity.
I understand, but how are people supposed to forget...
Nobody's saying to forget (even tamashii, in the comment to which you responded, said that he remembers). I have to agree that stuff like this gets me really down. We try to work together to create a better world, and incidents like this sometimes make me wonder why, why we bother trying to save ourselves, when we suck. Remember that scene in The Fifth Element, when Leeloo questions the decision to save the world? She said something about how everything we create, we use to destroy.
So yeah, I hear it, and I sympathise, but I don't dwell on it, because that just leads to impotent fury and melancholy. I'd rather wish the departed and the survivors well and focus on more positive things than trying to understand what happened. Like Debi said, I'd rather take the opportunity to positively impact my little corner of the world, 'cos life's too short.

I send my prayers to the families of the lost loved ones. This must be almost unbearable for some. I am deeply saddened by such a heinous act.

as far as this shooting, i am quasi-local. it's been on the news all day. they did a comparison to other school shootings & this one beats all. The one in Texas was "only" 14 people.
Sometimes, you have to be satisfied that you are not part of a problem, but you are contributing to a solution. Sometimes, you stand by yourself, doing what small (or big) thing you can do, without recognition. Let this horrible tragedy remind us all of how much we love our families & friends, and show them every day.

Roanoke Timesis the local newspaper. They are doing an excellent job covering this unspeakable horror here in VA.
Pray. Hug your family.

This was horrible (understatement of the century) and I lived in Austin when the Killeen shootings happened. It's all so f'd.
I keep wondering wtf the guy was doing for 2 hours in between shootings?!
