i say anyone who has red dwarf down for 'on the tube' really needs to read the books... you can't not love them.

I think this deserves some discussion I suspect there are some more strong opinions out there! :)

So, TV series or books? And will that promised movie ever eventuate? Comments, anyone?

The Red Dwarf books are actually written by the same guys that wrote the series. It's like having all the main story arcs from the episodes re-packaged into novels. But, the characters have a lot more depth and I was able to connect with them more than in the TV series.

Babylon 5, on the other hand, has 3 trilogies that were written to continue the story arc past the end of the series... they were all outlined by JMS himself, and are just awesome. Of course, they wouldn't make much sense if there was no series.

And, The Princess Bride, the book, is hella funnier than the movie. It's unbelievable -- or inconceivable! I love the movie, a lot... I love the book even more. Buttercup is the most hilarious and lovable ditz ever, Prince Humperdink is huge, Fezzik and Inigo have rich backstories, and Westley's... pretty much the same.

...It does have a 20-page fictional intro that kinda drags, but it makes all Goldman's little asides throughout the book make sense. (Yes, the intro is fictional, I researched it... Goldman wrote the book, not S. Morgenstern)

That said, I don't think I'd like any of the books as much if I hadn't seen the series/movie first. I think in general the two versions complement each other very well and make each better than they'd be on their own... greater than the sum of each.

Put me down for "Both", if you haven't already.

If anyone comes across any profiles where Fight Club is under Reading... point them to this thread okay. I'm curious.

And I forgot to mention Clan of the Bear... the books kick much ass, and I've been advised to never see the movie.

Clan of the cave bear movie is so wrong it makes me sad, your advice is correct

The books and series go hand in hand - I love both. Reading the Dwarf novels is like watching 'mental TV'.

They've been talking about the Dwarf movie for years. Not holding my breath! :)

Yeah. I've always loved both.

For me it works kinda like Hitch-Hiker's. I grew up with the original Radio Series (and subsequent re-recordings) which gave me the voices for the characters that took on new life in the books.

When I read the books (must do that again soon!), I definitely imagine the TV series cast as the protagonists in new/altered situations in the books. I really can't separate Lister from Craig Charles, etc.

As for the movie, penguin puppets can't hold their breath anyway... ;)

I just realized, you were only asking about Red Dwarf... I somehow thought you were asking about tv and movies versus books in general. Sorry for sidetracking your thread, rotassator.

That's cool.

There's a bunch of things here already that I didn't even know HAD a book. eg. The Princess Bride. Must go look that up! :)

I was going to say why don't we open it up, but the title would be a bit misleading! Maybe we should start one up? It can link back to this one for Dwarfers. :)

"Clan of the Bear" - book was good, movie was awful. Years ago some one gave me a VHS tape copy of Clan. I unspooled the mylar to tie trash bags.
