Cultural Curiosities

I've got a few questions about social norms on IconBuffet that I'm hoping I can get clarified.

Firstly, when you get a set you don't have the tokens for, should you wait until you get your token refill and accept it then or reject it so they can keep their stamps and ask for it later?

Secondly, is joining a clan as simple as adding it to your profile, or should you contact a member first?

Thirdly, and this isn't really related to the IconBuffet community, but what distributive rights do the Free Deliveries licenses give you? I understand they let you use them in personal and commercial applications (so long as they aren't pornographic, libelous or otherwise unsavory), but can you then distribute the application without getting consent from Firewheel Design? I'm asking this purely out of curiosity, and for future reference.

1. It's really up to you. It's more polite to decline the delivery because, as you stated, the person who send it will get their stamps back. On the other hand, leaving a delivery idling in your inbox removes it from the list of sets you're missing, which means no one else can send it to you; if you decline it, you'll need to keep declining it, because as soon as it reappears on the list of sets you're missing, someone will send it to you.

Fwiw, I decline sets right away, but I don't mind keeping up with declining them, since in my case, the backlog can't ever be really massive.

2. Yes, it's as simple as adding it to your profile, in one of the "interest" columns.

3. I'm almost certain that you can distribute the application without Firewheel's consent. I'm almost certain that you're okay as long as you don't re-distribute the icon set as it was downloaded from this site (that is, in its entirety, multiple formats 'n' sizes, etc.).

Hope that helps.

1 - Deliveries expire after 7 days. So if you wont have your refill before, it's nice to decline right away.

2 - Usually there's a thread for each clan on the blog-forum. You can say "hello" there if you want.

3 - Just like justG said. :P If you have a doubt you can contact the chefs directly at : chef@iconbuffet.com

1. You will find dissenting opinions on this. Some people will ask you to decline straight away. Others will tell you that declining a set opens the gateway for more (repeat) deliveries to be sent. If email is a problem for you, you're free to turn those options off in the my account section, so that you're not bombarded by things you don't want to see/receive.

2. You can talk to them, but you don't need any kind of "permission" to join a guild/clan whatever. Just adding it to your userinfo tells everyone where you stand.

3. I am nearly certain you cannot redistribute them as an entire set. If you open the little ReadMe in any icon set you download, it tells you exactly what FireWheel's policy is on this.

Doesn't look to me like #3's been answered fully yet, so here's my view:

You can distribute any application / web-page / etc. which uses the icons however you like without permission, but you CANNOT have something based around downloading the icons specifically (i.e. using the smiley sets as emoticons in a forum of your own is ok (I've asked that before) but making an add-on pack of emoticons for a forum (i.e. making a mod for PHPBB) isn't. Same idea goes for applications too)

The license terms are really very generous. Once you've acquired the set, you can use the icons in as many of your own projects -- personal or commercial -- as you like. Even if you use every icon in a set in your application, you don't need our permission to distribute that app around. What we ask you not to do is pass the icon archive itself around or distribute the icons in a form divorced from any project. For example -- if you know someone who needs a set of yours for a project, just have them sign up so you can send it to them.

Thanks for clearing this up :).
