Icons Spamming

Is there any way to stop people from constantly bombing you with unsolicited icons? It gets annoying really quickly, even in the rare occasion when you *do* have tokens to spare.

don't reject the deliveries.

You can now turn off the emails you get from your account page which might help a bit. You will still get the Free Delivery emails from the Chefs.

I don't mind the odd one or two it's when they send you every set they have that it gets a bit tiresome.

If my profile says NO TOKENS then it's pointless sending me sets, and sending 20 or 30 sets just wastes my time and yours.

BlackBart on Jun 19, 2007

I concur. If it's a newbie doing it, they usually understand if you send a polite explanation as to why it's bad form.

JBVisions on Jun 19, 2007

I have a stock notice that I copy and paste which is very polite even if I don't quite feel like that at the time. :)

JBVisions is on to something. Is there any way we can at least get a 'No Tokens' designation, or maybe a 'No tokens, refill on xx/xx' message added to the public profile? I would love to get rid of my stamps, but it's pretty frustrating trying to find people who have tokens to receive them.

you can add that [No Tokens, refill … ] to your personal profile page & add something to your avatar, but … it is ignored anyway by many!

Info in the profile doesn't stop spam sending.

I had written more but I think it may have been a rant.

If I didn't ask I won't accept. If they didn't comment I will hold stamps hostage. I spread my requests around but always from a list of people I've made a note to ask.

Probably the person who just sent me 8 sets (not a newbie) has so many stamps they won't even notice the difference.

CHEFs - Can you add an extra check when listing friends that don't have an icon to only list friend that have ENOUGH tokens to accept it? Same goes for listing other people (not in your friend list) that could use the icon - don't list them if they don't have enough tokens to accept an icon. That would cut down on some of this problem.

Thanks.

Become a "stampblocker". If you haven't requested that set, just keep it for a week. They won't be able to use the stamps.

BlackBart on Jun 19, 2007

@bcarnerio - That goes some way to deterring them (and any little helps I say) but I can't help agreeing with mik's last paragraph either.

JBVisions on Jun 19, 2007

I don't block, mainly because I can't stand seeing all those lovely sets I could get if only I had some tokens. If it's just one set from one person then I can't see the problem.

It's the people who either send their entire stash or keep sending the same one over and over, even when you've commented in their box that you don't have tokens. Those I will hang onto after they've arrived for the second time.

minchua on Jun 25, 2007

Having something built into the system like what eagle suggests would be FANTASTIC.

The Chefs have stated that hiding token information is intentional. They want us to actually communicate with each other when we exchange icon sets, and they also don't really see a problem with what many of us have dubbed "spamming." I'm not really sure it's working, but I think that's what the rationale is. This is why some IB community members change their avatars to reflect the number of tokens they currently have.

debbye on Jun 25, 2007

changing your avatar & posting in your profile rarely seems to work. Having a flashing neon sign might help some, but won't coordinate with the drapes & futon!

Combining tips from this thread & others, i am changing the way i do business with icon sets.

if someone leaves me a note along with the set, that says to me, "hey, i was thinking of you!" and i will send a note back to say i have no tokens, thanks anyway. i am a believer in civility.

if there is no note, it depends on my mood & who is sending the sets. if i don't mind staring at these unsolicited icons, i will hoard them. & i might feel a little evil person sneaking in to gloat, particularly if the sender has the habit of spamming. more often than not, i will just reject the sets, because i don't want to look at them for a week, but i do so in the same vain in which they were sent and don't feel "bad" because i didn't send the appropriate response, after all the "appropriate response" isn't deserved.

louiemctool on Jun 25, 2007

what annoys me is that these "spammers" are ruining what up until now was good mojo. its the first thing that's truly angered me when i visit this site. if i wanted icons, i'd ask for them...
