Delete vs. Cancel vs. Close etc...

I've seen these functions represented differently by various icon artists, and sometimes represented differently by a single artist across multiple icon sets. Is there any standard for what Close, Cancel, and Delete icons should look like?

Close is generally an x with a square around it. Most of the time. That one is fairly regular.

Delete and Cancel are the wildcards. I've seen pretty much everything imaginable for Delete, including just an X, an X with a circle around it, a single diagonal line with a circle around it, a minus sign with a circle around it, etc. And while I think Cancel is generally the single diagonal line with a circle, I've seen some of the Delete variations used to represent Cancel.

So what's the deal? Is is just designer's prerogative? Or is there any industry standards for these icons?

Words are clearer, anyway. :)
