Try changing it to a .JPG File and give it another go.. Make sure its not Animated as there have been issues in the past..

the chefs are scared of geeks bearing gifs. Change you avatar to JPG or PNG. See this avatar blog for more info.

There is no problems with animated avatars!!!

If it makes you feel better I spent a bit of time trying to upload a GIF avatar. This was before there were any postings about animated GIFs being disabled. NOTE TO CHEFS: could you at least change the error message to something a little more informational? How about "GIF images are not supported"

I just uploaded a GIF myself. It should work fine so long as its not animated. If it's not working, there's probably something corrupted or incomplete about the file itself.

so what is the story behind the animated ones (new, that is) not working?

iconmaster on Apr 27, 2007

We're resizing the avatars on upload. Animated GIFs have multiple frames, so a simple resize won't work. We're not sure what we're going to do there. Note when an animated GIF is uploaded and skip the resize? Maybe. We'll see.

Mine isn't working either, and my avatar is not animated. I had changed it this morning, but decided I want to change it back to the purple panda jar - but I get the same error page and now have no avatar. :)

I tried changing the filename (removed an underscore) and it's still wonky. :(

I've done a few tests (that's why my av is weird lookin') and it seems like if I make an animated gif that's 48x48 (which would mean no resizing) it still doesn't work. HOWEVER I started decreasing the colors used in the pallete (Fireworks) and when I got down to 4 colors, it uploaded, but its NOT animated (see original)

Chefs -- maybe pallette is a factor?

Hmm.. ok this is very odd. I'm able to upload a .jpeg but not my .gif the gif is not animated and it was uploaded here previously. I can email the file to Chefs if you guys want to look at it and see if you can upload it to a test profile or something. -shrug- Really, really odd...
