Spinning wheel, drop spindle, loom, weaving, sheep (dog, cat, alpaca, buffalo, silk, cotton, flax, hemp, camel; hell, I'll spin anything), scissors
mik on Jun 07, 2007
oooh..
mittens, toque, scarf, 1 & a half socks
ball or skein of yarn without needles
spinning wheel, drop spindle
needle with thread/yarn
laundry symbols: hand wash, machine wash, no bleach, iron, etc.
scissors, grid ruler, measuring tape, safety pin, clothes hanger, clothes pin
To be fair, the chefs should be warned of the potential massive influx of new IB members if they produce icons along these lines.
I'm currently plotting my next yarn fix, but just can't quite decide.. I need more enablers!
OTN: coral cotton, swatching on 2.5-3mm

Gizmos, Meerkats, Horses (several of my potential referrals want horses). More musical stuff, preferably Tower Grove style, guitars, drums etc. I seem to be getting quite a few Musician/Music related sites to do.

Cool blog!
We do need those listed above, and could certainly add:
Embroidery hoop
Emboridery floss
Cat playing with yarn
Yarn colors

Lots of good knitting/textiles icon suggestions above.
I’ll add:
• tiles used in patterns (k, p, cable, ssk, etc.).
• cable needle.
• something representative of dye/colouring.
For some … unusual … knitting imagery, see the Revolutionary Knitting Circle (which is one of my various activist projects).
And the Peace Knits banner.
Finally, I’d love to see a knitted pirate flag. Arr!
Hey, while we’re at it, how about a new IB clan: IB Textiles
Thanks for the great suggestions.

I don't know if I'm in the same area as you... I'm the netadmin of a hosiery manufacturer and would love the following:
Knitting Machine
Yarn Creel
Yarn Cone
Embroidery Machine
Embroidery Thread Cone
Boarding Machine
Dye Machine
If I get enough time (heh, like that will EVER happen), I might try to create a couple of them... If so, I'll let you guys know...

if you are interested in seeing some quilting icons & loads of wildlife, go to Hantaro's 'GARAKUTA' Factory. it is a Japanese site with amazing work that has been around for over 10 years. Some is downloadable, some is not.
He has also done wonderful illustrations of whales. =)

I was thinking about color and dye too but have no ideas so far of icons to clearly represent the concepts.
@grantneufeld: we've already got yarnaholics which is now on aaroncampbell's Guilds/Clans Standings thanks to maldenjen's PR efforts. Join up anytime!
Oh, how about a frog pond icon? (Those who knit will know that's where problem projects go when you rip-it rip-it rip-it.) A Google search for "frog pond" knit turned up only about 35,400 results ... all those knit bloggers would love a frog pond status indicator. But what would be good icons for OTN, WIP, FO? (on the needles, work in progress, finished object)

How about that bedside basket with 6 2/3-finished projects in it...or am I the only such loser!?
Blabby on Jun 08, 2007
You are NOT the only such loser. Although, I've very proud that I just completed an afghan that I've been working on for FOUR YEARS! You'd think it was huge, but sadly, it's not. I only worked on it for about one week during each of those four years.
As for my crafty icon ideas - I vote for:
a spool of thread
a rubber stamp
a quilt square
a ball of yarn with needles
scissors
thimble
sewing machine
rotary cutter
Thanks for starting this fun thread :)

@maldengen: You can fit all your unfinished projects in one basket?!?
debbye on Jun 08, 2007
when i move, i'm building a studio first! that way i can have a cute little house & ALL the rest of my stuff ( all craft & art supplies ) will be in that studio, only permitting one or two projects into the house at a time!! =)
i'll let y'all know if that works!
maldenjen on Jun 08, 2007
@mik: LOLROFAOUP (anyone get it?) Um, noooo... I didn't say that. I just can't stand seeing more than 1/2 a dozen at once! There's a 40-gallon tupperware in the closet for the other stuff.
@debbye: It won't work. We should say goodbye before you move, since you'll then be disappearing into the studio, never to be heard from again...
mik on Jun 08, 2007
@maldenjen: I got maybe half of it..?
@debbye: I concur w/maldenjen. Unless your computer is there too we may lose you entirely which would be too sad.

@mik: Just being silly... Rolling On Floor All Over Unfinished Projects :)
mik on Jun 09, 2007
Being silly is an important life skill!
Watch out for the projects that still have needles in them, could be hazardous.

i do have a laptop, so i can send out a distress signal if i get buried in "myStuff !"
that is, if i can find the laptop!!
if i live too far off the grid, i'll have to find someplace to go once a week or so, for a donut & a cup of wireless!!
webmonkey on Jun 09, 2007
it's really hard to find someplace gridless these days. I live in a national forest an hour away from anything and have DSL.

My dad has pay an arm and a leg to get special satellite "high" speed - it's only a little faster than dial up, but it seems so much better that he hardly complains - he lives out in the country in Oklahoma.
