web designers: i need a little help, if you will!! :)

i'm looking to create some background images for a web site i'm working on (mostly for practice), and i'd like to create something with a subtle texture. so, i pose this question to all you professional (and maybe not so professional ;) ) designers out there:

is there an easy way to create such a image? and what tools do you recommend?

thanks in advance!!

:)

I've made my own in Illustrator and Photoshop.

If you want something quick and easy check out the free ones available online like at this site. They have tons and you can then "tweak" them in Illustrator also.

i've used Illustrator and Photoshop for most of mine. And I used GoLive to develop all the pages. You may be able to use Gimp or something if you don't have photoshop.

what kind of texture are you looking for?

danielsemper on Sep 06, 2007

I recommend Adobe Fireworks. It is the image software thinked for webdesign. PS is more for PRO photos and Illustrator for Print designs.

@danielsemper this is interesting to me because I use an old version of Photoshop dating before all the different products were released. My answer to Louie would have been to use Photoshop with a tile filter. Does Fireworks use the same filters/patterns as Photoshop?

illustrator + photoshop

If you are familiar with the Adobe interface (PhotoShop, Illustrator, etc.) then GIMP is a good FREE alternative. However, before I learned the PS interface, GIMP confused the daylights out of me, because I did not know what to do.

i think theirs something that changes gimps interface to be more photoshopish

anti on Sep 06, 2007

Yes I have that. May help a bit. I think they call it Gimpshop or some such.

It may be possible to do something like this using Irfanview (You do have Irfanview, right?) and Filter Factory. I have not messed with that in a long time.

um, i guess "textured" was a little vague...

i want to have a background with a, um..., not really a gradient, but not a flat tone, either...

guess that doesn't help much, but its the best i can come up with...

i used PS to bring a picture of a tattoo design of mine to life. the actually image was probably drawn in Freehand eons ago. brought it into PS and used a filter. (plastic wrap, weird name, but i do love the stuff!) it brought dimension to the image. i have a tendancy to use it a lot, just to make things stand out sometimes.

there are all kinds of filters, and gradients. there's tons of combinations.

i've not tried gimp, but it's free and worth a shot.

Louie - is your goal to learn a tool (Photoshop, Gimp, whatever), or to get an image to use?

If it's the former, I recommend that you crack open that tool, Google yourself up some tutorials, and follow along. If the latter, try taking advantage of the many free graphics resources out there.

There's no shame in leveraging existing resources by having someone else create your images. Heck, that's why I'm at the Buffet. ;)

louiemctool on Sep 06, 2007

@katie: both, actually!

and anti helped me figure out what i was looking for: i want a "de-stressed" look...

Well, just in case you're using Photoshop, here are some tutorials and stuff to check out. (It's late and my eyes are crusty, so you'll need to copy and paste yourself.) :)

Yep. That should keep any aspiring Photoshop monkeys (or penguins) busy. Yawn.

I still don't know exactly what you want. Can you give us an example of what you like, maybe in a webpage or so? That way, we can tell you the b est tool to use, and how to do it.

Visit my site at http://cattya.com. The background looks just blue, but if you look carefully you will see a texture... Is this what you want?

tyrion on Sep 07, 2007

Yes, show us some example of what you want, should be more easy for us to help you..

Section of tutorials on texture (22 tutorials).

pshop tutorial on texture, pattern.

If this is not enough, Links to Long Lists of tutorials available online for photoshop, illustrator, or gimp. The photoshop one is very extensive. Some tricks are not that difficult to transfer from Photoshop to the free gimp.

That should get you started and help you provide examples of what you are after.

@rajr19 that's gimpshop.
