Is it just me, or does the new AdAware suck a**?
i made the mistake of upgrading to AdAware 2007. good gravy, does it SUCK!!!
how do you take a perennial favorite application, and just completely f*** the whole thing up? i mean, dude, WTF?
anybody here agree with me?

Haven't upgraded to it myself. For those of us who haven't experience the suckage, could you be more specific?
louiemctool on Aug 11, 2007
hmmm... where to start?
installs active shield as a separate app, even though you can't use it unless you pay for a license.
updates frequently fail for no discernible reason.
it actually BSOD'd my friggin' computer...
scans take A LOT longer than the old version (even the quick-scan)
after the BSOD, i simply uninstalled it. i will never, ever use that P.O.S. again...
especially when CounterSpy kicks its butt in almost every category...

and its not just me. if you check the user reviews, most people are giving it 1 star, and it only gets that because you can't give negative stars...

Urrr totally different huh. I fially realized what you were referencing. Yes the new adware seems like it it pushing for $ now. That is if I got it correct this time hehehe

I stopped using AdAware the last time they borked the upgrade. I now use XoftSpy (paid but pretty good), Spybot Search & Destroy, Spyware Blaster and SpywareGuard
They all run happily alongside each other. I also have the full BitDefender Pro package for viruses which also now includes spyware checks and mail scanning.
Between the lot of them my machine stays pretty clean.
louiemctool on Aug 19, 2007
bitdefender, eh? i thought about using that. then i read about it takes up WAY to many system resources. that, and McAfee's heuristic scanner pretty much whomps on everything... too bad their update process is ungodly complicated.

I only have spybot S&D.
I am too boring to pown.

CounterSpy rocks...
CNet.com agrees

BitDefender is a great AV tool but yes, it can really hog resources and I have been thinking of changing but I won't let McAfee or Norton anywhere near my machine. Had far too many problems with both in the past.
Ideally I'd use Sophos but it's far too expensive.
louiemctool on Aug 21, 2007
i use Avast4Home. its the free version of Avast AV. it scored fairly high in the last PCWorld AV review, plus the editors and users of CNet.com seem to like it.
it also doesn't seem t take much in the way of resources.
maybe i should start a "what's your favorite security software?" thread...
:)

BitDefender carries a firewall with it and email scanner as well as AV and anti spyware. Hence the resources.
