IconBuffet Poll: What do YOU use to protect your computer?
i've had a few conversations with other IBers about security software, and i thought it might be interesting to poll the entire community about what products they've placed their trust in...
so, if you all don't mind, let's hear it: What's your favorite security software, and why?
:)

I put a giant condom over the computer. Of course, you have to use non-lubricated, or the monitor gets kinda icky...
Seriously, run Linux, keep patches up to date, surf safely, sit behind a BSD firewall. Have a Windows VM that I can wipe easily if it gets infected. Run NoScript in Firefox, and be careful about what sites are allowed.

@jmnovak - surprising "protection" !

Spybot Search & Destroy, Adware and Norton.
But the best is to surf with Firefox 24/7/365 :)

Ad-Aware SE Personal

AdAware, occasionally run HouseCall (online virus checker), and (would you believe) windows firewall :S
I'm shunning McAffe / Norton / etc because in my experience their software's practically virus/adware itself (system slowdown, advertising on startup, random files *everywhere*, etc)
louiemctool on Aug 21, 2007
@ Dave: wow. you've got more cojones than i. i wouldn't dare run my PC online without an AV...

WINDOWS:
Least privilege user: user
antivirus: active virus shield
anti-I-dont-know: windows defender
firewall: zone alarm
antispyware: ewido
process scanner: process explorer;

LINUX: nothing (Clam ?!!)
OPEN BSD: nothing

louie: heh, it's not so bad as long as you're sensible online. 2 years with this computer and it's never had a virus yet. Worst the scanners have found is tracking cookies, which for some reason they rate as very dangerous :/
(and I just found out that my router also has a firewall built in, so I'm not just relying on the shoddy windows one)

1) I try to show a little common sense. I don't open attachments, visit questionable websites, I have no curiosity whatsoever.
2) If I can't resist being dumb I use BSD.
3) On Windows, I use AVG, Sbybot S&D, Windows firewall, router firewall usually, anything but IE, and know how to reformat. I have never had a problem except for when I first put Windows on this computer. I was troubleshooting my connection and hadn't put on any security. I took it down to the library and plugged into their cable for about 2 minutes. I picked up all kinds of nasty stuff.
