Blinksale: Easy, painless, online invoicing for small businesses

What do you do?

Okay, so I'm curious... there are quite a few folks hanging out here now. And I'd like to know, what do you do? And what drives you to spend your time here at the Buffet?

Are you a designer? Developer? Student? Hobbyist? Freelancer? Something else? Satisfy my curiosity and let me know what you're up to, and why you're here.

I guess I should start. I'm a designer by trade, but now much of my time is spent on the business side of things. I run Firewheel, the company behind IconBuffet. How about you?

I'm a graphic designer, right now I'm doing freelance work venturing to web design. My design and inspirations came from different kind of music, mostly to local scenes and also to most foreign films that I watched. I also write poems, essays and short story. I also aspire to be a novelist someday and still working on my 7 year old novel that I have neglected for 4 years now.

watehey on Mar 24, 2007

What's the subject of the novel, Mr Bunny?

cry187 Vip-micro on Mar 24, 2007

@ watehey
It's called Isola: A Stagnant Tide. I also lost the supposedly first novel I was writing before that. I've written 3 chapters on that but I lost my manuscript somehow.

Avatar-default-large

watehey on Mar 24, 2007

Isola? Does that refer to the Slovenian city, or something else?

mcd on Mar 24, 2007

Designer, previously of all things small (icons, Palm OS and Pocket PC interfaces, etc). Now sort of a designer of all things screen-related, as well as publisher of a small local magazine on the side.

cry187 Vip-micro on Mar 24, 2007

Oh, I wasn't aware that there is a word such as isola. For my book, it only meant as isolation or isolated. It's what I call in the book to wandering souls who can't see other souls. They could only see the living. That is why they felt isolated and alone since they felt like they are the only lost soul around wandering the earth.

Sly on Mar 24, 2007

Currently I am a Senior Engineer (with my degree in Electronics). I am right in the middle of changing career from being a Senior Engineer in a small company (doing all kinds of PCB design, development and software as well as PLC control systems and project management and their Website and other internal jobs) to a Project Engineer in a very large company who does pure project management and project assessment.

I am not sure if this is a good move or not, but the salary and career prospects are much better in the new job. I have been doing my current job for 8 years so it is time for a change anyway!

In my spare time I used to work on Ikonboard (a Perl based message board) where I ran a very successful and (was) well known independant hacks, modification and bugfix site called s the basic version of my story without the complexities :D

cry187 Vip-micro on Mar 24, 2007

I hope it would be a good read, if I do finish it ;)

Sly on Mar 24, 2007

Oh crap where is that edit button :'(
The last paragraph should read:

In my spare time I used to work on Ikonboard (a Perl based message board) where I ran a very successful and (was) well known independant hacks, modification and bugfix site called Swarf.net or IBSupport.com (now unused). After a few years of that, I then moved, with a group of the Ikonboard developers, to help write and develop Infinitecore which is a PHP based message board where I did quite a bit of PHP coding (the lead programmer was far superior to me and all credit goes to him really!!), HTML, Javascript plus all the smilies along with some of the other graphics. After that, when I got ADSL, for a year I helped on a support site for my router, helping with config and problem solving, I ended up running a fairly popular independant support FAQ. More recently I have designed, written, maintained and developed several sites the most notable being Ross-on-Wye.com.

I then found this site in it's previous format whilst hunting for graphics although I did not join the trading community there. Since this site has been updated I kind of got interested and have been hanging around ever since.

Well that's the basic version of my story without the complexities :D

@ cry187 - With distraction like this place, that may take a while.

@ Sly - perhaps you could lend your bugfixing expertise to the chefs here. :P

@sly,
good thing you posted again. I thought I'm still having problems with my connection since the link you gave earlier doesn't work.

cry187 Vip-micro on Mar 24, 2007

@watehey
yeah, a lot of distraction. I thought it was enough that I hang-out regularly in other forum/board but I found IB to be a great community to hangout. Goosh, Maybe I need a Shutdown Month so I could start writing again @_@

Sly on Mar 24, 2007

IMHO a post parser would solve some issues and an edit button/delete would solve the others.

I am sure they are working on all these things themselves  It just takes time :)

I like the community here too, everyone is friendly and willing to share, quite rare qualities so it seems.

Nursing educator. I've started developing some nursing education related software -- nothing commercial yet, just freebie stuff designed specifically for my students. I'm a better programmer than graphics artist, so I was looking around for some available graphics. I'm not sure the TOS and License of IconBuffet can be stretched far enough to include any of the free icons to dress up my software, but I check in now and then anyway.

justG Vip-micro on Mar 24, 2007

I've been producing web sites for (oh-my-god-how-has-it-possibly-been-that-long) the past 14 years. I'm freelancing now, but looking for more stable work in Toronto, Canada.

Additionally, I'm embarking on a couple of new journeys, first as a co-owner of a multimedia production company and second as an application developer.

Web production has become, for me, a stress-inducing field that offers too many solutions for a single problem. I'm tired of re-evaluating every blogging platform and CMS every 3 months or so. Some structure, some discipline, a very linear path to a very definite goal (Objective-C + Cocoa = Mac app dev) just sounds like absolute bliss to me right now.

Dabbling in 2D illustration and design, and 3D modeling and animation, is a hobby, and the plan is for it to remain just that.

This is fun stuff. I was out this afternoon and missed much of the discussion, but I'm glad to see we have a decently diverse group.

@ Jan - you're certainly free to use the Free Delivery icons in your software. We simply ask that you don't redistribute the raw icons en masse apart from your projects (in essence making this site irrelevant). We want folks to get the icons directly from us first. After that, you can more or less do with them as you please. I'd love to see a screenshot of the software if you ever do decide to use some of our icons in there.

KatieK on Mar 24, 2007

I'm a web designer & developer by trade. I have a bit of the obsessive collector mentality, and I'm impressed by the unique and high quality of the icons here. Also, free is a very good price.

I'm a full-time student, majoring in Neuroscience and Behaviors; I work part time for an evil empire (music-related), and am re-building an open discussion forum that was running fairly well before an issue with my host. I also do some freelance design of stickers, 'zine layouts, and stationery, when I'm not sewing plush pins & badges. I like to be busy. I'm here because I believe in supporting anyone whose design skill rises far above their need for praise and recognition from "the masses" and I have a soft spot for the little guy - even if he becomes the big guy :)

Jan on Mar 24, 2007

@Josh - Thank you. That was obviously the answer I was hoping for but didn't expect, so I'm thrilled! :) Kyoto Geometry is going to look great on the Basic Math Review software. I'll definitely send you a screenshot. You guys are terrific!

I'm a computer scientist with a degree in multimedia. During my studies I stumbled upon IconBuffet's free deliveries, and used them in some websites I designed. Last year I worked as a developer at a Belgian bank, and used some icons during the development of some intranet solutions.

Nevertheless, I missed the life as a student, quit working, and started studying again. I'm now studying architecture, and don't have the time anymore to design websites, personal nor for others... Unfortunately...

So what I'm doing with IB's icons in the meantime? The same collecting obsession as others seem to be dealing with...

tamashii on Mar 25, 2007

Right now, I am the Art Director (by virtue of being the only art guy here) for a software company.

I do a lot of random design work for myself and a smattering of production work for other companies that have friends of mine at the helm.

I come to IconBuffet for some "me time" as well as to see good icon design. IB churns out some nice stuff and who wouldn't want free icon sets?

This is also a pseudo-networking community, I think. I mean, I get to virtually meet other designers and such here, so that's always a good thing.

Service delivery specialist was my title until just recently. I worked as liaison between our company and wholesale customers to resolve circuit, ani and toll free order issues, and escalate internally on the customer's behalf. I also pull reports and proactively monitor their orders. I'm now a center repair manager in the maintenance group. I handle third level outage escalations and work internally on behalf of the customer. I'm a hobby/self-taught designer who likes to plonk around with both images and tableless css. What brings me here? The ability to meet new folks and collect the sets!

Great thread - fun to see what everyone does! As for me, I've worked for a small company that creates and supports UPS certified shipping software for the last 12 years - can't believe it's been that long. Recently moved from managing the shipping software development to redoing all the in-house software (CRM, accounting, etc.) in .Net. Can't wait to use some of the IB stuff in the software! Also have my own jewelry design business - sterling silver and semi-precious, just started on metalsmithing, which is great fun. Hoping someday to turn that into my day job. I'm here because I've always been a gaphics and icon junkie....can't help myself :D

Cool to see this thread got revived. Glad I didn't completely miss out! :)

I'm a Software Engineer, although programmer is more appropriate. Currently doing application design and development. I've also wondered (like Jan) if we could use these in commercial apps, but it seemed like the TOS wanted a note in the About box (which isn't too much to ask, by any stretch, but some of the little tools don't always have an About dialog).

Other than that, for the last 10 years or so, playing with the "web stuff." (x)HTML, JavaScript, PHP, Perl, ASP/ASP.Net. Leaving the real work to be done in C++ and C#. :D

In my spare time I write columns for 2 music magazines and sub edit one as well.

Well I'm still in school, age 15 :)

I'm looking at becoming a web designer, and IconBuffet is my home to stay because of the quality!

ambershaffer on May 29, 2007

The IB census! I'm a web/email designer. I'm wracking my brain to remember how I found out about IB over a year and a half ago, but can't...either a web search for "icons" or else one of my many newsletters name dropped the site. Anyway, I just pop in once in a while for a break from work.

What was the question again? ^.^

OH... sorry... ADD. XD

I used to be an office worker (don't do it! Don't throw your life away! X_X). Now I'm a bum. Er... I mean, I'm a writer. ^,^ I've been a full time writer now for precicely 518 days. Most of that time I've spent actually learning how to write, without an office-fried brain. (Kinda changes everything when it's not physically painful to think.) So no novel yet. But I'm working on several, feverishly. lol

Why am I here? Well, to begin with, I can't stand looking at the same, boring icons on my computer all the time. Secondly, I'm very silly, and like to have all of my story folders with icons that remind me of that story. (Just try finding icons that remind you of a sci fi story or fantasy story. >,>)

Finally, I like to use the PNGS for IM avatars sometimes. Like the shiny blue frog icon I found. >looks at it with big, watery eyes of admiration and love<

Oh, and I'm also a chronic procrastinator. So it's another thing that actually keeps me from doing my job. Which from time to time becomes a serious problem. ^,^

THEY make me. I don't want to!

tommythewolfboy on Jun 09, 2007

My name is Thomas, and I was raised by wolves before developing an unhealthy addiction to pixels (yum, they taste crunchy).

I now design websites, provide UI consultancy, illustrate, create fun flash stuff (games! yay!) and hunt deer with the rest of my pack (OK, that last part isn't true).

I also used to be the drummer in a UK band that almost made it big, but, um ... well, almost ain't enough is it?! Now spending my time colouring in instead, but have many great memories and somewhat gallingly, have played a gig with just about every other popular UK indie/rock band over the last couple of years at one point or another. Haha, and none of them as good as my lot, of course ;)

I am an independent code monkey also, picking up anything from front to back end as needed for clients. I homeschool my children (I have lots) and live far enough away from everything that I feel secluded, but not so far that I can't have DSL.

I'm a part time local government officer, and part time web developer. I spend more time on web development though - local govt. I do 19 hours a week - the rest of the time my web development and on a "web" day I'm at the keyboard around 14 hours a day.

Why do I hang around IB? 'Cos it's so darned addictive! I love icons and I like collecting points and having a laugh on the forums. What I don't like though is having no stamps. Kinda spoils the fun :-(

I'm a flight attendant. I've taught myself x/html, css and javascript because it's fun (most of my friends gasp at that part, but I figure ya'll will understand). I'm planning on learning php next (suggestions for books/online tutorials welcome).

Guess I should have been something other than a history major! But I love to learn about everything!

I'm a web designer and to some small degree, a developer as well. I've been making websites for some 11 years now, and I'm here at IB because they make great icons. I signed up a while ago, but never traded before you launched the new system.

Oh, and I want to work for Firewheel, you guys seriously rock :)

I've been a comedy writer for about 20 years. I've written sitcoms but now my full energy is directed towards my site Animal-Internet.com It's a social networking site that publishes humorous editorials written by animals. I found IB while searching for a designer to update my site. I hope Firewheel to gets back to me and can do it. I love this place!

I'm 15 (as of yesterday), I run a small web design company I created. We also develop programs, and graphics. I enjoy IconBuffet greatly. I also do a lot of freelance work for my school.

I'm trying to get into doing some web design work, but I have yet to really do any work for anyone. I plan on getting a portfolio site up sometime soon, along with offering free sevices for a bit.

I joined IB cause I really wanted one of the icon sets, but I didn't realize how cool the site as a whole is...

Gee, I feel unworthy to be included with so many highly dedicated and creative souls. At 51, my many paying jobs have included selling shoes (long before the Bundy fellow was on TV), driving a delivery truck (2-ton), a grill cook for DQ, a Special Ed substitute teacher, staff writer for a weekly paper (BA in Communications), freelance writer, and my current career, caring for adults with developmental challenges. Of course, my most important occupation has been mother, and then grandmother, to 2 daughters, 4 sons, 4 grandaughters and a soon to arrive grandson. I know nothing about icons 'cept I like them. And that when I stumbled upon the IB about 20 months ago I found a great treasure! Thanks Josh. And thank the others for me, too. Take care, Terre

Programmer (hobbyist). I got the Icon Buffet Pack that came from the Visual Studio Express benefits page, and eventually came here. I also knock up a few things in Paint.Net: go to my DeviantArt page (dawmail333.deviantart.com) to see some of them. I have some better ones that I haven't put on there yet.
