The REAL Story of the Expired SSL Cert
So actually CI Host is not to blame for this one (well, not directly). Our cert was actually renewed through Verisign (for 3 years nonetheless) over a month ago. Unfortunately we moved offices literally days after we renewed the SSL cert. Verisign takes a couple days to process the renewal — at which point we'd moved across the street.
Well, as it turns out — in order for Verisign to finalize the cert they need to verify that we are—in fact—a real business... by faxing them our last phone bill.
You can imagine that I really don't keep paper copies of phone bills around. And since the move (and a bunch of service changes), we haven't received our new Verizon bill yet. So hopefully that will arrive over the weekend, so I can *fax* it to Verisign... so we can actually get the cert back.
No, we're not cheap. We just got screwed by Verisign. Such is life. Sucks. I hate domain registrars, phone companies, and just about anyone who holds monopolies over our lives. Okay, I'm done. Now you know. Sorry for the hangup on this one.

This reminds me of a similar problem I have at work. I work for a private members golf club, which is run by a committee of 12 people. When the committee make decisions they fail to tell the members what decisions have been made. This causes the members to get annoyed with the committee and starts rumors around the club which are always wrong. The committee then hear these rumors and decide to tell the members what is actually going on. I have always said that it would be better to keep the members up to date on whats going on to prevent rumors in the first place.

Dont forget about the mushrooms. They flourish if you keep them in the dark and feed them s*%t. :)

We used to have to deal with Thawte who had their office based in South Africa, then relaying information for customers who would mispell one line of their address, provide the wrong documentation from Companies House and we'd have to start the whole process all over again.
On the other hand you can get a GeoTrust key in just under 10mins and all you have to do is click a link in your confirmation e-mail. I suppose its a question of how much proof the user needs to prove its really you. Most people probably wouldn't know the difference or even care as long as they got the padlock.

@senorgooner, That sounds exactly like my committee! :¬)

losing your last phone bill should be a certain sign that you are—in fact—a real business, you should *fax* this to Verisign!!!!

In the Bible it says they asked Jesus how many times you should forgive, and he said 70 times 7. Well, I want you all to know that I'm keeping a chart. - Hillary Rodham Clinton

Why not go for a free certificate from CACERT? http://www.cacert.org
Their root certificate is not in IE or Firefox at the moment, but it soon will be.

I hate people who still work with paper only. I mean, isn't this the 21st Century? I find there are still a lot of companies that don't accept online payments (my pet peeve). They tend to not receive my business. I mean, who still writes checks?
higherprofits on Jan 17, 2008
yup, I've had SSL issues myself with moving... pain in the ass.
tylermenezes on Jan 17, 2008
VeriSign has epic fail. There's many better SSL Cert providers out there which are in the root authority of most browsers, but no one ever uses them. Always VeriSign.

Yup, that was me. Looked at the padlock. Looked at the screen. Thought, "Well that sure looks like it's still IB..." Then thought, "Well, it's not like I'm gonna be handing any dosh over to 'em right now, just virtual tokens...." so, [Accept, blah, blah, blah] [OK] *click* ;-)

the boat got stuck on some cables. then tipped over. so now they have to send another one out. but they're not in very good shape, so they row a lot slower...
yep.

@louiemctool - so are they responsible for the i-net cable break around/near Dubai?
