Social Gamers Wanted
Hey Friends — I'm doing a bit of research on social gaming with the intent to dig a bit more into the psychology of why people play games. So I'm looking for some folks... specifically folks who have spent a bit of time playing games like Pokemon, Magic: The Gathering, and WoW. It's okay if you've played online versions of these games, but I'm primarily looking for those who have spent some time playing the card games.
If you fit the bill, leave a comment below. I'll post more details soon. Thanks!

robbyrice on Jun 15, 2007
wow! I'm really surprised that no one has responded to this post. You would think that with a community like this there would be at least one person who would have experience with these games.

Hiya - I play WoW Online - have done for 6 months or so. What do yuo want to know - am happy to help if I can. I have played both Pokemon and Magic - but that was way back now...have not touched a deck in years - not really since MMPORGS really began to take off.

I'm not a social gamer, but I came across a freelance writer (who you might already be familiar with) named Chris Dahlen who writes about these topics. Might help with your research.

I used to play Ultima Online back in the day. really enjoyed the way you could chose to do what every you wanted in that game. You could be a Baker, an Adventurer, a Thief (complete with stealing out of other players inventorys), even a begger.
It added a Social aspect you just don't get in newer MMORPGs like WoW and made the online world feel a lot more alive.
if you want to know more about Ultima Online just ask! :)
KikkoToji on Jun 15, 2007
To clarify: Do you need CCG players who play games with media tie-ins?
"Social gamer" has a very different context to me, but I come out of the paper-n-pencil world. ^_^ I do a few CCGs, but not much past the initial boom.

I am a Magic: the Gathering Player. I play mostly physical cards but sometimes go online. I have enjoyed introducing my 10 year old son to a game I have played for years.
Jen on Jun 15, 2007
I have played WoW online for more than a year now, but never any TCG's
tamashii on Jun 15, 2007
/sigh… *raises hand
Pokemon here. The TCG. Back when it was getting started. I used two decks I called “Boiling Water” and “Hippie.“ The first deck should be pretty clear: Fire & Water. The second deck is Earth and Psychic. My brother-in-law also has several card coffins full of Gen1 Magic cards (black border) and we played that game pretty extensively (I got pretty good at using Mosquitos).
I have also played some other, very kewl variations on the TCG idea. Notably – Pirates. There are a couple of other “build-it, play-it” sets out there, but Pirates is the best.
I have also played so many board/card games that I’ve likely forgotten more than most of you even know. And after almost 5 years of playing FFXI, I will be hanging that MMO up this month (I was lucky enough to beta for PS2-US).
Ultimately, I love TCG games and will play them any chance I get if they have a good premise. However, I absolutely can not stand the groups that play at your local comic book shop or the like. Whenever I encounter these types of players and those environments, I want to pull my eyes out with silly putty and shove them into my ears.

I love tabletop and TCG games. Played Magic when it first came out (yeah, I'm that old). Played Rage (remember the old werewolf-themed TCG?). Played Lord of the Rings. Played Harry Potter (yeah, seriously). But, these days, I don't have the time. Kids, marriage, job. So, I do my gaming online now. Magic Online once in awhile. Lord of the Rings, when it was more popular and you could find a game. Much of my time is in WoW when I can, though I like PoxNora as well for a different game that has the feel of minis and cards.
Anyway, that's me. Howdy! :)
sevenupcan on Jun 15, 2007
Magic the Gathering, ahh that brings back memories. From my own experience it was the ability to choose your own strengths and weaknesses, so no one strategy would ever be the same. For example in Magic, being able to choose with mana you wanted to control, or if you wanted to mix each mana.
Another good game to mention is Risk, one of my favourites.
sevenupcan on Jun 15, 2007
I'm not sure if this is related to what you want to do, but another good source of inspiration that I would say has a similar style to Iconbuffet, is both the Achievements you can get on the xbox 360 and earning medals in Halo 2/3.
I have an idea for a new type of online Role Playing Game, that involves quite a bit of social interaction and some web savyness (2.0) I'd be more than willing to explain my ideas if you're interested.

I'm basically looking for CCG and Tabletop game players at this point, but if you're heavy in any MMORPG I'd be interested in chatting as well. I'm going to host a chat sometime next week, and I'll be inviting a few people to attend. I'd like to pick your minds a bit. Let me know if there are any more of you out there...

I have been playing tabletop games since highshool.. say 10 years or so.. mostly D&D or any of a million other systems but all pen, paper and dice.. we play once a week or so whenever we get the chance these days.
irwinhurst on Jun 15, 2007
I agree I would not call them "social games", although being social is a big part of why I play them. I have been playing board games for close to 15 years. We have gone through many phases from D&D and other RPGs, to Magic:The Addiction, plus all the so called EuroGames. I wouldn't mind chatting if you want to talk more about it.
davethegr8 on Jun 15, 2007
Used to play M:TG back in the day. Been itching to bet back in as well, but I don't need another "project".

Pokemon cards, those were so awesome. I remember starting out wtih one and trading off with friends to gain over 200, I had a special section in my book with the "rare" ones. It was so fun. =D

Hey. Here's stuff I play / have played
Physical:
Magic: The Gathering
Rage
Pirates (as tamashii mentioned)
Pokemon, although I never got into it much
Most of Games Workshop's tabletop lines, like Warhammer and Lord of the Rings
Risk/Axis and Allies type games.
Settlers of Catan
Online Games:
Dawn of War (a Real Time Strategy based on Warhammer 40,000)
Guild Wars
City of Heroes
The Specialists
Freelancer
Probably a few more that I can't remember though, it's 1:32 AM here so you'll have to forgive me.

I've played UO for a couple of years and WoW since 11/2004. I've tried EQ, EQ2, Shadowbane, GuildWars and Star Wars Galaxy. I started playing so that I can have an "activity" to share with my boyfriend. We've met great people with whom we are still friends after six years and several games later. It's fascinating to meet people and become friends with them even though you know that if you were to meet in real life you would have nothing in common. I guess people are different when they have a pixelated front.
xxelexisxx on Jun 15, 2007
I played a forum based MMORPG called gaiaonline, been there since 2004. I like the fact you can socialize with other members with an avatar that represents you. You earn gold by playing the games, posting, selling art, polls etc. The more active you are in the community the better. The challenging part is acquiring the pixelated clothes/items you need to build your avatar/s.
I did played some other MMORPGs too, like Guildwars and Ragnarok, but I enjoy socializing more than completing quest or killing monsters maybe thats why GAIA is perfect for me and I dont plan on leaving soon - its like my alternate world. ^^
aeosdur on Jun 16, 2007
Was into Yu-gi-oh TCG between 2004-5, dueling with a jaden deck. For unbeknownst reasons I still buy booster packs whenever I chance across one.
I prefer MORPG/MUD(multi-user dungeon) more than TCGs. Been MUDding since 2000.
Unlike WoW, Ragnarok or Eveonline which rely heavily on graphics, MUDs are text-based MORPGs.
I MUD on Necromium, Medievia, Azilar, Achaea, Materia Magica and Lusternia.

Neopets: 1 Year+ (Online)
WoW: 2 Years+ (Online)
It isn't so much that I don't like card games it's just they have to be able to reach out to me first -- which is why I really wanted to get into the WoW card game but the price tag that goes along with it is ridiculous on top of our regular monthly online fees. I think that if you show interest and play online, you should get a discount and/or some nicer cards to start your deck with. I have a couple of friends that play it and really enjoy it, but I just don't have the extra time or money to want to right now.

OMG! Please tell me some IBer out there has more than 350 Pokemon monster cards (meaning, not including the trainer and energy cards). I also have over 20 holographic cards (not included in the 350 monster card count). Yes… I also have 2 of the special cards received from going to the first Pokemon movie… /shame.
And it doesn't end there… I have an imported Japanese Pokemon Neo 1 starter set. The flip coin kicks so much ass.

I've been playing WoW: TGC since it came out. My co-worker and I play every afternoon, tuning, testing, re-tuning and are getting ready to take it to the next level. I had previously played Magic semi-competitively, he had played Jihad (Vampire), and we're both huge online game players (he was a highly ranked Quake player).

...check back here for details tomorrow (Monday).
Where's that update? ;)
KikkoToji on Jun 19, 2007
I have done a variety of CCGs, table-top, and (of late) LARPs. I'm a "weirdo" in that I typically am interested in things that lie outside what most people are playing. (Over the Edge / On the Edge, Heresy, Castle Falkenstein, etc.)
When I hear "social games" I tend to think either of "mainstream" games (Monopoly, etc.) or games where it is largely an excuse to get together (and thus, can still be enjoyably played after a few rounds of beer). Stuff in the Cheapass vein or Apples to Apples.
JoshuaJarman on Jun 19, 2007
i've played both Magic and Yugioh in "real life" ;-) and Yugioh online which came free with an issue of Shonen Jump.
ever since i saw llor.nu at a rails conf a while back i've been wanting to use RoR for an online game.
Best of luck!
Cheers.

Perhaps an update on the status of this “project”?
KatieK on Jun 20, 2007
So, if we're including traditional board games here, I'll throw in my 2 cents.
I love board games. Settlers of Catan is great, though I think Starfarers of Catan is even better. Puerto Rico is also very good. For lighter fare, I often play Flux and Apples to Apples.
I don't play MMORPGs or TCGs because I know I would be far too completely sucked into their time and money sucking black holes.

Dunno if this is too late, but I've been playing WoW since the open beta, which was two weeks before the official release. I'm more of a casual gamer, but I've spent a bit of time in it since it came out.
I used to play Magic:The Gathering a lot back in school, and I also played the short lived Marvel Overpower CCG. Never really got into any other tabletop games tho (like WarHammer, etc).

I'm a big video gamer... but I've avoided games like World of Warcraft for my own good. I've seen how addicting they can be. I don't even want to risk it. I stick to regular video games. Never got into the card/table games though.
louiemctool on Jun 25, 2007

i still play M:TG when i get a chance. i feel for tamashii. i hate dealing with those uber-nerds too. i could never understand how someone could classify him-/herself as a good gamer when all he/she did was copy some decklist that someone else used at worlds. me, i play a straight-up goblin theme deck no matter what...
i will also admit to a pokemon addiction. and not just the game, either. i've got a big tote full of miniatures and whatnot stored somewhere.

Main RPGs I play are:
Oblivion - Very vast and exciting world to explore, enjoy that I don't HAVE to follow a main quest, but if I feel like it I know it's always there to do, I also like that I can level up as much as I want on my own and the quests will still be challenging.
A Tale In The Desert - A large and vast world to explore. A world created entirely by the users. Everyone is nice and mods are non-intrusive. Mostly the social aspect.

I also played Magic for years before I gave up (and that was only because some dude stole my card collection). I have also played to table top RPGs since 14yo - and given the fact that I'm 31, that makes quite a long time. I tent to focus on D&D3 when I play now, mainly because the rules are quite simple and effective.
And I have yet to meet a hardcore female gamer (although I'm no longer a hardcore gamer). Just to verify that they exist.

I was at SXSW in '06 and listened to one of her talks and she went into a great talk on how game developers are the best at getting users in and keeping them hooked. She refers back to this pretty often on the "Creating Passionate Users" blog...

Hi - new to IB and just seen this post - I was one of very few high level UK women players of MTG. I gave up playing quite a while ago (around 2000-2001) but spent a couple of years playing at pro-tour qualifiers with strange reactions from guys who had never seen female players beore! Example: "I've heard of female magic players, but never seen one before" and the classic "oh - you're a girl" (from the observant ones!)
I also play Warhammer 40k, Warcraft3 and WoW on line!
Don't really know what you want to know, but ask away if you have any q's!!

hey, M:TG playas:
what's your favorite format (Type I, Type II, Standard, etc.)?
got a favorite deck type (control, weenie, etc,) and color?
i personally prefer to play house Magic. i remember a few times when we'd play team Magic and the game would last for a freakin' hour...
i like to play "red weenie," or ,specifically, a Goblin-themed deck. i call it "Army of Semi-Darkness" 'cause i try to stick to "army" creatures (warchief, general, commander, etc.). works surprisingly well...
DarkMystress on Jul 17, 2007
lol louiemctool!
Used to love sealed deck formats - especially pre-release ones when no one had any idea what kind they would get!
I used to play type 2, though most of the cards I played with are probably now type 1!!
Always liked playing red, black or white or any combination of the three!! General weenie with lots of extra control spells and a few serra angels/sengir vampires for good measure!
Always hated playing against blue decks - it's like a game of 'mother, may i?'
OK - enough of this, I off to play Warcraft3 !

I started with the first of the magical Myst series back in the mid 90's and have played each game as it came out, but they were strictly one player games. Breath-takingly beautiful, challenging and immersive. http://www.cyanworlds.com & http://www.mystworld.com
URU Live is based on Myst and is one of the hottest online games. The graphics are awesome. It's a mixture of adventure, complex puzzles and interaction with other online players. Warning: it's compulsive!
