[Points & Friends] A New Feature!

For all you IconBuffet regulars, it's time to get those points cranking. We're about to introduce a new feature that will make it easier to find new folks to trade with. But you're going to need some points.

Before I explain, let me tell you a few things about points though: First, think about points as more of a status or class system, not as something to be spent. As IconBuffet matures, your point level will be used to "unlock" new features... like the one we're going to be introducing shortly.

With that out of the way, soon we'll be adding a new list of people to the Free Delivery pages. Much like you can view your friends who have or do not have a certain Free Delivery, now you'll be able to view random new IconBuffet members who are missing that Delivery and don't have a lot of friends.

However, we don't just want to be hooking our newbies up with any ol' Joe. We need to hook them up with someone special. So you're going to need 250 points to unlock this feature. Conversely, new members who don't have many friends — and are missing a certain Free Delivery — will be directed randomly to members with 250 points or more. Pretty cool, eh?

There are a few ways to earn points: First, when someone accepts a Delivery you sent to them, you get points. Second, when you invite someone to IconBuffet you get points. In fact, inviting 5 friends will get you to 250 just like that.

Many of you have asked about other ways to find new members, and I think this is going to be a great tool. So get crackin on the points!

Update: This feature has been quietly rolled out. If you have 250 points you can go meet some new people by visiting your favorite Free Delivery pages. Also, if you're a VIP you'll also have access to this feature, regardless of how many points you have.

New feature works now. Go! Find new friends!

Jen on Apr 20, 2007

Pretty nifty! Stamps depleted again!

lparziale on Apr 20, 2007

@iconmaster: new feature is enabled? easily finding new people to use stamps? how?

iconmaster on Apr 20, 2007

Go to any Free Delivery page for a set you already have -- like this one -- and scroll down.

You'll see a section labeled "These people are also missing this delivery." The users listed here are highly likely (though not quite guaranteed) to have tokens -- they're users with less than 250 pts and 3 or fewer friends.

Thank you iconmaster!

I like it.

greengurl on Apr 21, 2007

You know all those messages that pile up? the ones that say " so&so has just added you as friend ..." and then there's a little trash icon to the right?....are we supposed to trash the messages? ... I have a long list & don't know if it's point-related .. or if there's a point :p help!

dyar on Apr 21, 2007

You will see posts on your page saying XXXX has added you as their Friend - Do you want to add XXXX to your Friends Yes/No. It is safe to click Yes (you won't get any spam mail), the post will go away and that person will be added to your Friends list on the right. The Chefs have indicated that the amount of Friends will somehow be associated with a new Badge but haven't released any additional information. After you have added a Friend to your Friends List they will get the same post on their page. If they accept you will get a note on your page XXXX has added you as a friend! XXXX is already your friend. You can just click the trash can icon next to that post to make the message go away.

These posts won't affect your points either way.

It's been a while since i came in but isn't iconbuffet's forum running on vanilla? Just curious but this new looks is cool...man.

justG on Apr 22, 2007

@froots: The old forum was Vanilla, this one's custom.

MrDee on Apr 22, 2007

small glitch. if you have been sent a delivery - but do not have the tokens to accept it,you can still appear on the regulars who can send you list.

SpamDog on Apr 23, 2007

maybe this is in the wrong spot.. however.. i see someone that is one of my friends in the lower section.. he never showes up in the "XX of your friends have/need these icons" section.. we are both on each others friends list.. not sure what is going on.. The user is BoxofJack .. he has more than 3 friends and has like 300 pts.. must be a glitch I guess

@SpamDog--

If you have the set and he does not, he will never show up in the list according to iconmaster’s statement.

If you don’t have the set and he does he may not be showing up due to not being randomly picked to show up. Josh didn’t say 100% of the users would be displayed in the new list.

If he is not showing up in the top portion related specifically to friends with/without a given set, then it depends on his having/not having the set as well. I am not sure if he is experiencing some kind of bug, I would make absolutely sure he does or does not need/have a set (and it is not pending acceptance from him).

opello on Apr 23, 2007

That's a pretty cool feature.

FunkyMunky on May 11, 2007

Was this feature taken away? I no longer see a list of friends or new users in need of the icon set. Any one else experience this?

iconmaster on May 11, 2007

We took out the feature until we could get it better optimized. It should be returning shortly.

FunkyMunky on May 11, 2007

Ok good... so I'm not going crazy then. Thanks for the quick response.

memodude on May 17, 2007

yay, it's back. spam time!

caradotcom on May 18, 2007

Great to see this feature back. It's a great way to find people that can use some help getting started.

I think there's a slight caching bug under there from what I'm noticing. I pulled up a few people from the list for various icons and in some cases they already accepted deliveries of the set.

The other thing I noticed (from before as well) was that if the person was sent a delivery but not yet accepted it they were on the "do not have" list. While technically that's true, you can't send it to them again.
