Are You an Authentic Designer?
In case you haven't noticed, we syndicate quality job listings in our sidebar here at IconBuffet. These opportunities for employment are provided by the inimitable Authentic Jobs. Evidently there was a recent rush of employment opportunities posted at AJ, and we'd like to help them plug some quality designers and developers into these holes. So if you're looking for a great job, check out some of these new listings:
- Senior Designer for the NFL (woot!)
- Associate Designer for ESPN.com (woot! again)
- Flash Developer for Cisco Systems (for a special someone)
- Interface Specialist + Designer for 3000k (poseurs need not apply)
And if you're an employer — and you're hiring — you can reach the rabid designer and developer audience here at the Buffet by placing a listing at Authentic Jobs. You won't be disappointed.

I saw those, and would love to apply, but feel that I am woefully under qualified to achieve those heights at this time.
anti on Jul 11, 2007
Yeah I know the feeling.
dustybunny on Jul 11, 2007
I would love to do these but hate the idea of moving.
I wish more companies understood the usefulness of outside designers.
Atryx on Jul 12, 2007
Nice, but It's kind'a limited to the US :((
zelda013 on Jul 12, 2007
atryx : i second that emotion.

No jobz in Oz ... :(
JBVisions on Jul 12, 2007
I've looked at a number of the jobs but they're all US based. Whilst I don't mind commuting, the thought of a 3,000 mile swim every morning and evening does not appeal.
LoopyMind on Jul 12, 2007
Argh it's be a shame there'd be no "thou needs not to be 'ere in person" jobs there... As JB says, even by pirate ship, it's be a long commute!
webmonkey on Jul 12, 2007
I think it's funny that they call the position something like "HTML/CSS Coder" then in the requirements, ask for skills like expert level Flash and actionscript.

I wish the Canadian and US gov't would just get along so that we could work in each others countries. We are part of the same Continent for crying out loud!
Atryx on Jul 12, 2007
webmonkey - this is nothing ... there are some announcements here in Romania for "Web Designer" and they ask expert in everything from Photoshop to 3DSMAX and from CSS&AJAX to PHP&even Python :-o some people simply don't have any ideea about what they want !

LOL!
Hmmm....I've got Canadian relatives over here at the moment...I could always sneak back with them in their suitcase....

Out of curiosity, where y'all located? Interested to know if an international version of Auth Jobs would appeal to some of you...
KatieK on Jul 12, 2007
Seattle WA, USA.
But it really would be useful to 'search by location' functionality.
katho on Jul 12, 2007
I also feel SO undereducated looking at that site.
And when I finish my BFA, I will still feel undereducated.

I'm in Perth, Western Australia ... the "arse end of the world" ... :)

I'm in sunny ol' United Kingdom.
zelda013 on Jul 13, 2007
i'm in france, and i think an international version would be excellent.
brandy on Jul 13, 2007
I second KatieK's request, especially when it comes to RSS feeds.. I was recently job hunting and it was annoying that I could only apply to 1 out of every 25 jobs posted!
Spongefile on Jul 13, 2007
I could really use an international version too. Was considering posting a job, but didn't want to put the cash down if it's 99% US-only people checking out the listings.
Spongefile on Jul 13, 2007
Hang on, just noticed they've got a money-back guarantee! Maybe I'll post my job after all.
authentic on Jul 13, 2007
Please do! I'm not shy about encouraging people to take advantage of the money-back guarantee. (As a matter of fact, the first person ever hired from my site was for a job in London.)
Search by location, RSS feeds by location, and international versions... these are all things we're considering, and your feedback here is making me want to spin the wheels even faster :)
mattblasi on Jul 13, 2007
To all those posting thinking that you are under qualified or may not be able to handle the job let me just say that you may be selling yourself short.
I did that for the longest time, and was talked into applying for a job by a few friends and I got it, with very little industry experience consisting of some freelance work and then my portfolio which was mainly private study and practice.
Even if you think you are under qualified the most they can do is turn you down.....what have you really lost if this happens?
KatieK on Jul 13, 2007
@authentic: If you can get a location filter in there, you'll be beating the pants off the 37signals board. ;)
artdogprague on Jul 14, 2007
Well I just found this authentic jobs site through here. I am going to apply for a bunch of jobs. I'm qualified I have no fear of that. The question is whether anyone will be willing to allow me to telecommute. I live in the Czech Republic. The fact that my salary requirements are far lower and they would save on taxes and insurance may make me attractive enough to forgo the idea of my working in their office.
We shall see.
louiemctool on Jul 15, 2007
no, i'm not. is that bad?
i'm sorry....
:)

I'm glad to be able to look at just Freelance - Anywhere, but are entries screened at all for those aspects being accurate? Direct quote: "(Anywhere) Need freelancer onsite in...On premises work required.."
That's not typical, but it does seem many of the 'anywhere' listings are more 'prefer here but would consider elsewhere if we have to' which isn't my target market. So I'm aware of AJ but don't check it out regularly.
I mostly take jobs by referral. Happy clients are my portfolio — code is only beautiful to people who already know something about it, and my niche is small businesses who don't have tech staff.
