Trust me ye be a long way from runnin' aground of a blog closin' sandbar . Aye me 'nd me monkey navigated those waters earlier this month durin' a severe misunderstandin' that be all resolved before it became a banana wind.
Of course IB will shutdown - everything natural has a season. But me thinks IB be around for a while longer. In the beginning IB was created without VIP accounts so they not be a neccessity to the survival. Now that said, me 'nd me monkey download every set as soon as they be received 'cuz ye never know when the chefs might scuttle this cruise ship.
To everything (Turn, Turn, Turn)
There is a season (Turn, Turn, Turn)
And a time to every purpose, under Heaven
A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep
— adapted by Pete Seeger from Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 (known in Hebrew as Qohelet)

I don't think it will go away either, but I think that each and every one of us– Chefs included– can do something to make this site better, and we ought to do these things to ensure the site's survival.
There are, however, things that have started and not yet shut down: take, for instance, Apple (w00t) and Microsoft (boo). These companies have been around for a long time, but there aren't any signs of them closing. While I do think that IconBuffet hasn't quite secured its place among the sites and organisations that aren't bound to close any time soon, I think we have plenty of time to make that change– and when I say make that change, I mean that we can all help make IconBuffet into something that will last for years and decades and who knows? Maybe even centuries or millenia to come.
miranoriel on May 15, 2008
Um. Years, yup.
Millenia, mmmmmmmaybe not so much.

I am really kinda perplexed why anyone would think this place would just up and close. Of all the complaints here, this one is the most unfounded and mind-boggling to me. I mean, with the exception of chef-supplied icon sets, the site is rather self-sustaining. If there are four sets released a month, the site does what it says and it would remain perpetual beyond its actual needs.
And what if the sets did just stop coming? Should it close then? I think not. There is still a forum (you're posting in it) that is pretty lively. I believe there will always be new members who will want/“need” any of the 189 sets currently available. Someone will always be there to make the deliveries. Ultimately, I seriously doubt the cessation of new sets to result in the .com no longer existing (and that's the major worry and/or complaint). One might contend that without new sets, no one would have the stamps to deliver to the new members. Not so as I know of several active members with well over 700 stamps. This whole thing was never really about the points; it was about sharing icon sets. What should we care, really, if someone else makes the deliveries?
I'd say that as long as there is a forum, there is nothing to fear of the site going away. It just isn't going to happen. The activity might wane, but not even to the degree of this place turning into a ghost town. This is still a community site.

In short, IB will never die.
Wow, I can't believe I spelled “millennia” incorrectly. XD It was underlined in red by Safari when I typed it, too. Oh well, at least I use proper quotes instead of these: ""
All text from here on will be made bold so as to reinforce the idea that IB is not going to die.

eventually yes but i doubt it will close in the near future...I just hope my children can enjoy this site one day as well..
chii on May 16, 2008
I don't think it will get closed soon. But i believe the current model will not work for a unlimited lifetime (well, as above, nothing does :). IB will get more expensive to maintain with every year its running. I would like to see it get more community driven, this could same work from the chefs too.
B3llit0 on May 16, 2008
I think the chefs should offer tutorials on how to make icons in the theme of collections such as Amsterdam, Kyoto, and Claiborne. Then the users can submit their own icons. If they're approved, they're introduced next month. Imagine: if just ten user-made sets were approved, that would already be 14 new sets per month!
chii on May 16, 2008
@B3llit0
Yes, that what i mean with community driven!
I know there are excellent designers here (no, nottt me :). Someone could upload a preview of Sets and users vote which Sets are accepted for upcoming month. If a Sets get published the creator get lots of points or some donations :)
helloiamjules on May 16, 2008
lol why don't you guys stop posting about "are they gonna make it???" and start getting more people involved if you want it to stick around. maybe there needs to be more demand before they want to put extra and costly resources in.
just get more people on the site. it's always fun for everyone at the beginning & surely takes a few months before the fun slows down.
lol and what do apple and microsoft have to do with social icon sharing or whatever you'd call it??
louiemctool on May 16, 2008
the record's stuck....
:)
jameshilton on May 16, 2008
We are all obviously very passionate towards IB. I agree very much with Tamashii's comments, Maybe i was wrong to say I think IB is coming to an end, perhaps its just evolving into something different. The blogs have certainly helped me with web projects because of all the helpful FRIENDS I have made here. I must admit I have never used any of the icons but I enjoy collecting them, much better than cigarette cards!
B3llit0 on May 16, 2008
You don't have to use them, they're fun to just look at! XD I have, however, used Tonkawa Tiles in my schoolwork filing system reform with great success. I use Manhattan Smilies (1 and 2) on forums sometimes, too. I think some of them, however, like Amsterdam Artificial Sweeteners, are just there for fun.
In other news, I found out how to make my own Dresden icons and got the exact palette colours for Dresden and Alexandria… Alexandria has amusing hex values.

I had hoped that my "losing tokens" days were over, but tonight I lose 2 tokens.
I am a sad Panda. :(
dyar on May 16, 2008
hmmm... Number of Sets released is already equaled the number of Sets released last month and is at the highest level since February and the Token Value of the Sets is almost double what it was last month and the highest level since February, and the Month's only half over. It seems to me that things are looking up instead of down.

This is off topic, but… masokist, your name just reminded me of a time I defused a YouTube argument by pointing out someone's misspelling. They had spelled “masochist” as “masokissed”. I'm never going to forget that.

@helloiamjules
IB has already more users then it can handle. The Servers are on the limits most of the time. How could it help to improve IB if you involve more ppls with IB? On the same day u wrote this i introduced a friend to IB, you know what? He leave the Site because he said its too slow, unusable! First improvements should occur, then it will attract new users.
Oh, and IB isn't a game for everyone! I don't have many friends i can involve with IB. The Chefs know this too ...thats why PackRat happens. Read the announcements. Hey, and the other fact, talented peoples like our chefs have a lot of other options to earn more money then with IB ever possible.
gswd on May 17, 2008
Another point to remember is that when version 1 was around they were doing design work for clients. After ver 2.0, they said that they were not taking on new clients, and finishing up the work already contracted so that they could devote more time to IB and other ventures.
So, at this point, I don't know where the money comes from to keep IB running. They have overhead - offices (which recently relocated), servers, payroll, bandwidth, all the travel that they do, etc. I seem to remember they have said that the VIPs were appreciated, but that the VIP memberships do not cover their expenses, hence the advertising that was implemented and forced upon the VIPs that had paid to be ad free (albeit Google ad free).
I won't say that IB is closing. I won't go down that slippery slope of trouble again. And as a business they have the right to run their business in the way that makes sense to them, even if we do not understand it.
As it has been said here, things change. IB went through a major change with the version 2.0 launch. IB users changed as a result of that. Things changed again when Pack Rat came along. The one thing that we can count on is change. It may change in our favor, or not; but change will happen.
sloan on May 17, 2008
