Your current "missing" avatar is a GIF. Lots of issues using GIFs on IB. Try uploading it as a PNG. It will be resized to 48x48 so you should go ahead and make it that size.

I had some problem with uploading mine as well then. That's probably because I tried to upload a icon file. PNG did the trick at the end.
