Looks like you've already figured out how to add friends. Unfortunately, there is no way to trade without using tokens. Trading works by making an agreement beforehand, and then sending sets both ways.
To accept sets, you use tokens. There are three basic kinds of sets: Bronze, Silver, and Gold (and Diamond). These define how much you have to "pay" for sets.
Bronze=1 token
When you accumulate sets, and for other things, you earn badges (which go in the badges section in the sidebar). You can get your first badge easily. Just upload an avatar, and you'll get the cheese badge (you may have to log out and back in in order for it to appear).
