I know it's fashionable to say that Twitter is a waste of time these days, and I'm not trying to say it's some earth-shattering, life-changing site, but it does have its uses.

I work freelance so I don't get the mundane chatter that goes on in offices - which is a plus and a minus. Twitter is a little like peeking over someone's cubicle wall to see what they're up to - a fairly unobtrusive, undemanding way to make a quick human connection. I can turn it off when I need to concentrate (like closing an office door), but when I'm just regularly working, I can let people know what my day is like and find out how theirs is going, just like in meatspace.

My friends and I have also used it to hook up with each other when we're out and about downtown. 'I'm at X Place' becomes a way to find others you know who are in the area (kinda like Dodgeball).

Like I said, maybe not super groundbreaking or anything, but it does fill a need for human to human connection.

I'm into most forms of social networking, but Twitter just escapes me. I'm oviously in the minority, but I just don't get the attraction to Twitter. :)

Here's my attraction to Twitter: It's like guilt-free IM. I don't use AIM anymore because I don't have the time. Too many people can hunt me down to chat. But Twitter... well, I can post quick updates, links, whatever... And I get can the latest from my friends. But there's no pressure to respond or nurture it. You can be involved as little or as much as you want. Does it waste time. Probably. But it wastes less of my time than AIM did.

On that note, we also use Campfire around here a lot. Great for inter-office chatting.

when i first discovered the new and improved iconbuffet i was procrastinating... then i saw this twitter post on the 3rd and thought i'd procrastinate even more by signing up, having never heard of twitter previously. I did a few updates in twitter. Then within just a few hours of signing up i was contacted by a potential client who saw my website from my twitter account and liked my work. So these online communities definitely have there uses. :O)

I've tried both Twitter and Jaiku, and found Jaiku more useful: more passive presence and less constant insistent filling up of your inbox. It lets you add Flickr and other feeds, and has a bunch of really nice phone interfaces that do not involve SMS, and automatically update your location info. Blogged about it here.

Twitter used to be cool.

These days, it's crumbling, one badly-handled bug after another. For several weeks now, I haven't been able more than the first page of 20 tweets in my timeline, because the "Older" button is broken for me and quite a few others. And that's just one example - people losing all of their followers/following (restored after a big outcry but it took them days), accounts randomly deleted (as with the follow... problem the result of an over-eager and apparently not sufficiently monitored anti-spam bot - again it took days to solve for everyone). XMPP (jabber) has not worked for a long time. And so on and so forth.

Although I still get useful information from Twitter (what I can see in those 20 latest tweets), I'm unfollowing those who don't "provide" me with that, so there will be more relevance in those 20 I can see.

Meanwhile, I've effectively moved to identi.ca: I "live" there now. Why? because it's Federated (you can run your own and have your members communicate with other sites), Open Platform, Open Source, Open Content license (CC-BY). And its founder Evan Prodromou is as open as Twitter is closed. Because it's Open Source, new features are rolled out at a fast pace, any problems are fixed fast.

You can see all of your updates, XMPP works, we have #hashtags, and much more.

Follow me and play around. It's not a "twitter clone" - it's worlds better already!
