Le Brea Avatar Pits
Though it's a Chef who's composing this post, please don't misunderstand it to be official IconBuffet policy. I just want to be a helpful fellow.
Several people have stated in the Blog Forum that they don't befriend other IB users who have no avatar. Their reasoning is that if a user uploads an avatar, the chances are better that said user is likely to hang around the Buffet much longer than those people who don't bother. I tend to agree with that notion, but I also understand that creating an avatar may be a confusing, herculean task for many people.
No, I'm not about to offer a collection of original avatar images (though that might be something to consider at some far-flung future date). I am instead pointing out a few completely ludicrous avatars available from the makers of Barq's Root Beer and am hoping that other helpful Buffet sisters and brethren will utilize this space to share the URLs of other collections of 48x48 images.

Love the Root Beer but those Icons are really annoying.

I googled "48x48 icon" and found this site.
One could also use aol icons, they shouldn't lose too much detail when squished by 4 pixels. (they're 50x50)

There's a variety of avatar images on the Orneryboy site. I bet they'll resize OK.

I myself prefer to make my own avatars (utilizing graphic programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator). Maybe a clan of avatar-composers could be created for newbees who want a creative and handmade signature. What do you think?
sloan on Jan 09, 2008
please lets not call them newbees...My new word is defaulties.
Huh what time is it?
supertux on Jan 09, 2008
Do excuse me sloan. Didn't mean to offend any new-comers :)

I just find it funny that people need little pictures on a site that serves just that. ^^,

This site serves more than icons! Believe it or not, this is also a social site. Avatars are not only for identification purposes; some some IBers change/adapt their avatars to portray their current state of mind and/or IB Clan membership. As previously pointed out, info can be added to the avatar to let other IBers know your VIP and/or Token Status.
Also, I love to see the different avatars and guess how it's theme relates to the owner.
Lastly, if your an IB addict, how better to feed your addiction than to identify yourself with a personal "icon"?

Well said, Denise!

Smashing Magazine is a blog I frequent and they bring together great stuff from all over the web - icons are no exception, and they recently posted 35 (Really) Incredible Free Icon Sets and you can see a lot more icons | Smashing Magazine.
Many of them are 48 x 48 and therefore suitable for avatars.
You do need to read license / usage information, as they are sometimes for desktop use only, etc.

Thank you, NBaker & Othello. BTW, I love your avatars!

Sweet :D I'm linking this to my friend that refuses to use an avvie. I love Barq's myself but not as much as Kiefer...
