Do you want a compliment on your face?
Pssssst! You see that phrase up there next to the IconBuffet logo? It says "Welcome to the ice cream social." That's the tagline of IconBuffet. Well, for a long time I've noticed some weirdnesses about this tagline. If you show the page without images, it says "Pwned by the chef..." Hmm! What? Huh? Wha? I'm pwned by the chef? Interesting creatures, those chefs!
But this isn't where the weirdness stops! If you look at the image file for the tagline, it says tagline-2.gif. Two? As in version two? That must mean there's a version one! So I try changing the URL to tagline-1.gif and yes! Voila! I get a new image, this time a tagline that says "You have a lovely face." Why thank you, IconBuffet! I can guess that this was the tagline used before they figured out what they really wanted the tagline to say. That's quite humourous!
And then I thought, I liked that compliment on my face. And why not get a compliment on my face everytime I visit IconBuffet? So I've created a little script that replaces the normal tagline with the old one on-the-fly, so IconBuffet compliments you on your oh-so lovely face everytime you visit IconBuffet. Now, isn't that the best thing ever? What you'll need to make this work is to run Mozilla Firefox and then install the Greasemonkey extension. When that's done, restart your browser and click on this link to activate the script:
IconBuffet Face Compliment Script
And then, when you reload the page, the tagline have changed to a lovely one which tells you that you have a lovely face. And it will tell you over and over again. All you can say is thank you, IconBuffet. And thanks for being so awesome.

"you have a lovely face"..."welcome to the ice cream social"...you've been "owned by the chef"?
My brain wants to find a hidden message...
Is this some sort of sick metaphor I don't quite get?
"I gave them an ice cream social!"

I've been wondering about the hidden messages too, haha. Especially with the pwned one, since it only displays when you're not viewing with images. So something like: "You're not viewing images when browsing this site! Haha, you got pwned by the chef!"
Oh noes!
jmnovak on Apr 30, 2007
I would translate that as, "You've been so captivated by our wonderful site that you spent time figuring out what it looked like without images -- you've been pwned by us!" :-) (Ignoring, of course, that you might be using lynx to browse the site?)
jmnovak on Apr 30, 2007
Of course, in Lynx, it looks more like it's the menu that's been pwned...

Disabeling images does not do it for me, but when I disable styles: Pwned by the chef...

Oh my goodness, that's made my day! (Reminds me of the sorts of things I litter my own code with... Eheh.)

I'm glad it's something you all like. Sometimes it's the smallest changes that are the coolest.
I'll probably start making a bit more useful scripts in the future if there is the need.

Heheh, I love this. So very cool. XDD Now, you just have to go make sure that they don't delete that file while they go through their un-needed files. XD

Heh, always nice to see these things in other peoples code. Just like Kimberley, I always like to put a few of these things in my code..

You could have done it as a user style instead :
#tagline-2 {
background-image: url(http://www.iconbuffet.com/images/tagline-1.gif)
}
Need no for a script for that ?
