Speaking of horrible movies...how does a movie that scores 14% on rottentomatoes.com end up as the #1 movie?
JBVisions on Jul 23, 2007
Talking about tomatoes.... Attack of the Killer Tomatoes was so bad it was actually quite good in a cult movie kind of way.
JBVisions on Jul 23, 2007
Whoa! I don't believe it! There were sequels.

There are those movies which the Learned Professors of Cinema name as the worst, such as the aforementioned Tomato flick as well as Ed Wood's Plan 9 From Outer Space. But it just so happens that a few days ago I was having a "worst movies ever" conversation with someone, and three films came to mind, three films to which I took dates back in the day when I was taking dates to movies. These aren't films that are so bad they're good - like The Beast With a Million Eyes, which I viewed recently - but films that are my personal pick for being just plain terrible:
1. Three Men and a Baby ... Tom Selleck, Ted Danson, Steve Guttenberg ... BAD!
2. Light of Day ... Joan Jett and Michael J. Fox ... BADDER!
3. Cocktail ... Tom Cruise ... BADDEST!
Burn the negatives!
etherbrian on Jul 23, 2007
Wait a minute, debbye! Pee-Wee's Big Adventure is genius!
louiemctool on Jul 23, 2007
hey, i liked little nicky...
the most horrible film ever made:
Battlefield Earth. travolta screwed that movie up so much i nearly ripped my dvd player apart, 5 minutes into watching it, trying to get it out...
:(
debbye on Jul 23, 2007
Pee-Wee's Big Adventure was so bad, i left the theater!
JBVisions on Jul 23, 2007
Debbye don't upset him, he's pedalling away like mad and the buffet is zipping along. ;)
If I had to pick one of my most hated films of all time, (and I've tried watching it more than once and still don't like it) but others reckon it's genius, it would have to be 2001: A Space Odyssey
zero on Jul 23, 2007
The Pet
etherbrian on Jul 23, 2007
Uh-oh. JBVisions is stepping on some toes! I wouldn't call 2001 a terrible film, but it is tedious.
debbye, I still love you even if you are frightfully mistaken!
JBVisions on Jul 23, 2007
Actually I thought I was stomping on them ;)
louiemctool on Jul 23, 2007
my second nomination:
BloodRayne!
Q: how do you screw up a movie starring a hot, "curvy," blood-sucking vampire hottie?
A: by being Uwe Boll...
:p
kaplooeymom on Jul 23, 2007
Okay - I'm weird enough to have likes Battlefield Earth, and I then went and read the book. I kind of liked BloodRayne, too, as long as you understood the cheese factor going in.
I never could stand the Airplane and Police Story movies with Leslie Neilson.
debbye on Jul 23, 2007
wow, he loves me! [takes screenshot of etherbrian professing his love for me]
louiemctool on Jul 23, 2007
@kaplooeymom: if you haven't read the book, i'm sure it's not half bad...or maybe i'm too much of a purist. i didn't really like the LOTR movies much, either...
:)

This is very interesting, because you all have a different definition of what a "PAINFUL" movie is... Bad movies can be useless, boring, ugly, pretentious, hollow, French (I am French, I can tell), ridiculous...
Regardless of budget, eligible movies make me want to throw up / ask for a refund at your movie rental club / set something on fire. "Son of the Mask" is pretty exceptional because of its unconscious bad taste, so if you had a McDonald watching it, you're in bad shape.
What about those - not as bad, but still bad:
- "Stuck on You" (Matt Damon)
- "Snakes on a Plane", come on, it's not scary nor funny
- Worthless adaptations (and I'm a comic lover): "Alone in the Dark", "Elektra", "Catwoman", "X-men III"
- Matrix!!!! Read some sci-fi sometimes!
- "Honey" (Jessica Alba)
- "Along came Polly" (Ben Stiller)
blackudon on Jul 23, 2007
I agree Battlefield Earth was pretty bad (that hairy Travolta look was weird enough) - and I didn't like the LOTR much either, but then I was a big fan of the trilogy I had read as a teenager, so you always imagine things differently... I found the LOTR movies lackinf a bit of... magic.
me2orion on Jul 23, 2007
worst movie(s) i've ever seen!!
i heart huckabees.
(i've never felt so dumb from watching a movie and yet i watched the whole thing because i was in a coma from being dumb.)
Stratification on Jul 23, 2007
I know there are a number of people that liked it, but I couldn't make it through "Unbreakable" it just moved unbearably slowly. I'll second 2001, I came away feeling like that was time I'd just never get back.
As far as bad movies that ended up being entertainingly good, I have to say "Dragonslayer" was awesome. "I've been shot, but I can still talk!"
Leeuwke on Jul 23, 2007
The Da Vinci Code.
I don't know what some people see in that movie, but i do know one thing though: I HATE IT!
jezca on Jul 23, 2007
@ blackudon: XMEN 3, LOTR???? are you joking?
louiemctool on Jul 23, 2007
@jezca: i think she was agreeing with me when i said that "book purists" (like me) tend to not like movie adaptations...
as far as X-Men 3 goes, i think some people are simply suffering from "sequel fatigue." sometimes it's nice to enjoy an entirely new idea...
like IconBuffet!
:)
etherbrian on Jul 23, 2007
The French supposedly love Jerry Lewis. I agree with the French!
debbye on Jul 23, 2007
for the Tolkien fans here, what do you think of the animated Hobbit?
etherbrian on Jul 23, 2007
The Rankin-Bass take on The Hobbit was my introduction to Tolkien. With the passing of years I've become quite aware of its many shortcomings, but it still has a special place in my heart. It's interesting that the dialog, whether taken from the book or written into the screenplay, is so much richer and rewarding than that in most films these days.
louiemctool on Jul 23, 2007
i refused to watch it. it just looked so bad (reminded me too much of the "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" cartoon) that i couldn't force myself to watch it...
:)

the most painful souvenir for me is the lawnmower man 2 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116839)
in french, quelle daube!
jezca on Jul 23, 2007
@ louie: ah.. I see. still... i also read the LOTR trilogy and thought there was plenty of "magic" ...thought Peter Jackson did a phenomenal job with the adaptation.

My worst movies ever:
Pi
Kids - Painful.
Waterworld - My sisters call it "Peeworld".
Caligula - Truly disturbing.
and
Gladiator
I know I'm gonna take some flack for that last one. Let's just say that neither Russell Crowe nor Ridley Scott have ever done it for me.
JSun on Jul 23, 2007
Karate Warrior 2. I don't think there was a Karate Warrior 1, they went straight to number 2 and it was horrid!

I like bad films and I really like Howard the Duck. It is pure genius. It puts Men in Black to shame..

The 13th Warrior
Eraserhead
Running Time
redwolf on Jul 23, 2007
Blood Moon. A movie so lame and forgettable that I don't think IMDB even list it. As far as I know it has never been shown on television or released on video or DVD.
As a warning note to others; if a movie is released with the gimmick of a "fright break" in the middle where you can leave if it's "too scary" and get your money back, take the option. The film will not get any better.

So we found a really bad movie from the 80's the other day... Pure MST3K fodder. It's gymnastics! It's Karate! It's Gymkata! See the trailer at YouTube: Gymkata Trailer.
blackudon on Jul 24, 2007
@jezca: Burn me, whip me! I'm not joking. I personally think X-men III is bad, and by far the worst of the three. An insult to intelligence and to the original comic book. Didn't look like a movie to me, but felt like going to a super-hero zoo (a new character introduced every 10 minutes or so). Special effects extravaganza doesn't make a movie, you'd need a plot for that. Plus, the movie really spoiled the whole Dark Phoenix episode - which is one of my favourite in the original comic book (that moment when Jean removes Cyclops' sunglasses was really more exciting and the whole story was a lot more elaborated).
@louiemctool: thanks for explaining. Well OK, I liked LOTR, but not that much.
blackudon on Jul 24, 2007
1 vote for Da Vinci Code too! I'd put it in the really-overrated category, along with "Amélie Poulain" (again burn me, whip me!).
blackudon on Jul 24, 2007
Hey etherbrian, did you see the original French "Three Men and a Baby" (Trois Hommes et un Couffin). That may explain that. I think you'd find the original one pretty... mmmh... colourful.
sloan on Jul 24, 2007
Sound of thunder, that is my worst movie ever, the special effects were horrendous
etherbrian on Jul 24, 2007
Well, blackludon, it was under duress that I had to watch Three Men and a Baby. I didn't learn until later that it was a remake, so if I'd known beforehand I might have protested! I think back to the original version of The Vanishing. That's one chilling flick and is certainly something that cannot be improved by remaking it!
blackudon on Jul 24, 2007
In case that was not clear, by "Trois Hommes et un Couffin" being "colourful", I meant lousy. Lousy lousy lousy. French directors, please stop the massacre, go and do some.. wine or whatever, but just stop.
Uberz on Jul 24, 2007

Yes, Lawnmower man2 is horrible!
But the Robocop series??? They've got to be at the top.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
I doubt it can get any worst than this...
louiemctool on Jul 24, 2007
hey, Hitchhikers was okay. 'course, i suppose once i get around to reading the book, i'll hate it...
of course, i seem to like british humor, so maybe i'd like it better than some...
:)
bkendall on Jul 24, 2007
I think the movie was called Deep Blue...it was about a shark (yeah like jaws) but there was nothing entertaining other than the train wreck that was supposed to be the plot.
lparziale on Jul 24, 2007
Last month, saw a movie and watched it all the way through, praying I could just get up and smash the TV, but since I was watching it with others, had to sit PAINFULLY watching:
RENT
Now, I am not against the musical, loved Sound of Music and some others, but people, this fails to get the right mix of songs and dialog. UGH!! I bought it for $6.00 at Walmart to play at a small party and gave it away the next day at work.
