"Now this a pleasant surprise" movies

You weren't expecting much from it.
You had heard too much about it.
Its poster wasn't inspiring.
You had seen its main actor only in lame movies.
Its director was responsible for one of the "Home Alone" series.

BUT you ended up enjoying it, even sometimes worshipping it... Aren't these the best (OK, maybe not the best, but still...)?

Jean De Florette. If I had to lose every other video I possess, that would be the one I'd keep.

My "Now this a pleasant surprise" movie list:

- Dodgeball (good for cult movie award... just wait a few years)
- Apocalypto
- Casino Royale, with a title like that you can't lose, even if your opening sequence is really not convincing (that Chris Cornell song... hum hum
- The Skeleton Key
- The Butterfly Effect

Pee-Wee's Big Adventure! I didn't know the guy from Adam's house cat when I went into the theater. I stepped back out into the sunshine exclaiming, "A bizarre comedy classic!"

A lot of the really big blockbusters are like that for me. Once I hear so much about them I end up hating them but when I happen to catch one before the hype it can be quite enjoyable. Titanic was like that for me, I had heard nothing about it when I went to see it and thought it was pretty good. Later on I ended up hating it.

I think the problem with Titanic wasn't so much the film but that blooming theme tune, "My Heart Will Go On and On and On and On and On and On and......

Hm. "Dream for an Insomniac". A nice little romance/comedy; I picked it up on a whim back when I still rented videos from Blockbuster (we're talking 7-8 years ago...), and found it quite enjoyable. "Innocent Blood" -- not cult-level, but a fun vampire movie; doesn't take itself too seriously, a bit gory in spots, but with just enough of a twist to make it memorable. Plus a hot female lead. :-p "Rough Magic" -- first ran into this one while channel-surfing on cable (again, many years ago), and got hooked ; entertaining mix of detective noir and supernatural.

Ah, 50 first dates, not the Groundhog Day look-alike I expected...

"Trainspotting"

it was one of those movies you only watch 'cause your "weird" friend insists that it's funny, and you're like, "yeah, whatever," and then you watch it, and you're like, "dude, this movie is the bee's knees!"

:)

Blood Diamond.

I went to go see "The Good Shepard" but I was late. Blood Diamond was starting and I decided to see it instead.

I was blown away.

Ended up being my second favorite movie of 2006 (after The Departed)
