Question..

Just a quick question. What is it with penguin pirate avatars? Pirates, sure. I know there's an IB Pirate guild. But why penguins? And especially, why penguins who are also pirates?

penguin is everywhere
penguin is everything
penguin is everybody
penguin is still the king™

anti on Nov 08, 2007

er..I guess if you hafta ask...

louiemctool on Nov 08, 2007

and what, exactly, is the point of your question?

anti on Nov 08, 2007

Well, lets start from the beginning. The penguin is the symbol of owning you own data and computer, it indicates that you are not locked in to a specific vendor or hardware manufacturer.

Pirate tends to mean something else, but here in IB it indicates a commitment that nobody should have to wait for an icon delivery.

that is all.

so penguin for linux/unix, pirate for whatever?

supertux on Nov 09, 2007

Are you questioning the might of the penguin?

alethiophile on Nov 09, 2007

i dunno, am i?
i like unix too
i am a mac os x guy

anti on Nov 09, 2007

Penguin is Linux, UNIX has a little devil thingy.

OSX is UNIX.

JBVisions on Nov 09, 2007

Pirate Penguins..... you had to be here..... and preferably drunk at the time. ;o)

poscogrubb on Nov 09, 2007

well, the little devil (demon, actually) is for OpenBSD flavors of UNIX, no? I don't know of any mascot for the original (AT&T) UNIX.
IIRC, OS X is somewhat based on OpenBSD.

Phate on Nov 09, 2007

If you know the madagascar penguins, you can compare pirates with penguins... they capture ships :D

anti on Nov 09, 2007

I really think the new Leopard is Certified UNIX.

@JBV what you said.

alethiophile on Nov 09, 2007

@Phate: sure

gswd on Nov 09, 2007

I run all three, but I was just wondering (because of an article that I read) what if you run Windows on a Virtual Machine inside a Linux powered box?

anti on Nov 09, 2007

Lets see. First off, did you pay for that Windows?

programmerangel on Nov 10, 2007

@gswd: That's possible, and usually an easier alternative to dual-booting.

soprano on Nov 10, 2007

See the IB Penguins post. It has absolutely nothing to do with pirates.

Granf on Nov 10, 2007

OS X is fully certified unix

The UNIVERSAL unix avatar is the devil/demon thing

All command line unix tools have a demon-like avatar also. Take, for example, KisMAC.

Unix wipes the floor with linux

alethiophile on Nov 10, 2007

mac is great, i have never used linux much, windows is horrible

soprano on Nov 10, 2007

*nix are all OK, but I prefer Mac OS X (wait, does that count as UNIX?).

supertux on Nov 10, 2007

yah me too. My primary comp is the mac, but I have a compaq that I boot with Red Hat. (@soprano- yes it does)

alethiophile on Nov 10, 2007

mac! woohoo!
