Leaderboard
Here is the leaderboard. I have one script that collects usernames (currently 19471), and another that checks those names once a day, setting the top 50. You can see the current scores of the top 50 any time. The top 20 are posted here.

Note that the script has caught you twice.

Doh...Dang the case sensitive nature of array_unique.
I took one of me out.
seanhussey on May 22, 2007
Wow, yeah, I figured I was way behind. Top 20 ain't bad!
seanhussey on May 22, 2007
Well, I _am_ way behind, but I figured there were a lot more people close to 10K. :)
seanhussey on May 22, 2007
Let's make it 3 posts in a row!
@aaroncampbell: Can you list which ones are VIP?
aaroncampbell on May 22, 2007
I figured there were a lot more people close to 10K.
There could be. Unfortunately I don't have a comprehensive list of names. Hopefully people will post their names here if they have high scores.
Better yet, maybe a chef could pull the *official* top 50 from the database, whisper me the names, and I could monitor them and keep up this thread (until they make an official leaderboard).
Jen on May 22, 2007
How neat!
davethegr8 on May 22, 2007
I'd love to see a vip/non-vip leaderboard. That way we could get a better sense of the big traders. It would also be neat to see a points per set stat, because a lot of those people have tons of sets
aaroncampbell on May 22, 2007
I can't do images in a post, but I made all VIPs bold.
Jen on May 22, 2007
Could you perhaps add an edited date/time/timezone to your post? :D

Forevagrey on May 22, 2007
is there a place to see who is in the top 50 of your list? (i assume they have more then 3K in points at least)
lisamac on May 22, 2007
Oooh. I've been waiting to see this. I'm up there somewhere cuz I'm at 4720 :)
aaroncampbell on May 22, 2007
Well, currently my top 50 (48 actually...I had a couple duplicates) goes as low as 2080 points. I'm sure it's not very accurate (although I think the top 20 is more accurate).
I don't want to give out the link to this one unless I get the OK from the chefs first. It has to pull 48 pages from their server to parse, so if it gets a lot of visits, it will pound their servers a bit.
aaroncampbell on May 22, 2007
lisamac: take a look now...#20
You were one of the people whose name was not on my list of people to check. You're there now.
whoisgregg on May 22, 2007
You can cache the pages to reduce the load. I see you're using PHP so I can send you a code example if you'd like, just comment on my page if you are interested.

aaroncampbell on May 22, 2007
whoisgregg: If I cache the pages, the content wouldn't be up to date. Which is the whole point of having a link rather than just the list that I keep here.
bjendrick on May 22, 2007
Okay, being a programmer, I'm dying to know... how did you script this? Just very curious. You can whisper in my box if that's easier.
dishg on May 22, 2007
Hey congrats to everybody! glad to know I'm near the top 30s, lol... =)
aaroncampbell on May 22, 2007
The code is sloppy and uncommented (not a lot of time to do this kind of thing), but the basics involve grabbing the HTML from iconbuffet, and running some carefully crafted regular expressions to pull the data that I want. It's called "scraping" and it's a nasty way to collect data...but sometimes it's the only way.
bjendrick on May 22, 2007
Right... I'm familiar with the concept, but not the practice myself. As it is, someone says regular expressions, and I just stare in awe.
:-O

Ah, I can't believe I missed that. *embarrassed*
whoisgregg on May 23, 2007
I only meant to cache it for an hour or so in case you get a big rush to the site. It puts that little buffer between your server and the "target" server that makes sure you and your visitors don't ever accidentally DOS the target. (I even cache for my own internal pages that, ahem, "scrape" in case I forget that refreshing my page means xx downloads from a third party server.)

I have noticed that most of the people on the top 20 list have almost if not all of the icons. Would it be possible to make a leaderboard for people with under 50 icons? They work just as hard they just don't have the same number of stamps and icons to send. :)
dyar on May 24, 2007
Well, Filosof (#3) on the list only has 22 Sets, so you don't have to have them all to do good, and he still has 1,000 Stamps to use.
lparziale on May 24, 2007
Nice.... #10 - but I am OUT OF STAMPS
**sobbing uncontrollably**
aaroncampbell on May 24, 2007
Now that the Leaderboard script uses IB IDs, and not the user pages, it reduces the load on IBs servers enough to post a link.
I now have a small script that keeps an eye out for usernames on here, and store them. The Leaderboard script runs once a day, checking all those users (currently over 1250 users), storing the top_50 in a file. The script that you see is simply grabbing the scores for those 50 people and putting them all in order. So, the 50 people will only change once a day, but the points for those 50 people will be current.
Forevagrey on May 25, 2007

There are 3 chefs that are not VIP (this seems odd).

JBVisions on Jun 06, 2007
Must have infinite stamps as well. :-(
On the bright side, I just landed on the leaderboard. :-)
wmostrey on Jun 06, 2007
You should make a seperate list for people who never took VIP, since it is much harder for them to make points. The current bold listing doesn't really mean anything.
JBVisions on Jun 06, 2007
How does he tell whether they had VIP or not? If they had it on a monthly basis they'd stop when they got all the sets.
aaroncampbell on Jun 06, 2007
That's true. I would have no real way of knowing if they had VIP, unless I started tracking that in a database or something. I'm still confident that some day the chefs will start a leaderboard, and this will be obsolete.
silveria on Jun 06, 2007
you don't need vip to get points though.
aaroncampbell on Jun 06, 2007
True. There see to always be 4, sometimes 5 non-VIPs in the top 20 (Go silveria). Now, take into consideration that (generally) VIPs are more likely to spend more time here, etc. It doesn't seem that off.

aaroncampbell on Jul 12, 2007
Apparently JBVisions is upset that he's missing from the list when clearly he should be on there. There could be others too. The script updates the top 50 once a day, and often gets timeouts or server errors. If one of those two things happens when it's checking your name, it skips it...and checks it again the next day.
Patience is a virtue.

Ryuzaki isn't an active account anymore. Can it be removed?
aaroncampbell on Aug 18, 2007
No, his IB badge is still active, so the leaderboard still gets a total for him. The chefs need to remove his badge, or make it show 0 points.
rajr19 on Aug 18, 2007
yeah soprano sent an email to the chefs about that.
tamashii on Aug 20, 2007
i don't know what i'm talking about, but don't you technically have to tell your program that generates the Leaderboard who to look at? i mean, if you remove his id badge from the script, it shouldn't see it, no?
aaroncampbell on Aug 20, 2007
The program scans the Iconbuffet site for valid usernames, and keeps them in a list. As long as there are still links to to his user page (which there are), his username will be picked back up.
It's not that it couldn't be told to ignore his name, it's just that I don't want to start accepting changes to the script, because I'm not all that interested in putting that kind of time into it.
tamashii on Aug 20, 2007

aaroncampbell on Dec 21, 2007
I've said a few times before that I'm really not interested in making any changes to the script. I don't have enough interest in IconBuffet anymore. I did link to the source code a couple times, so if you want to get it, modify it, and run your own thread, you are more than welcome to. You are also welcome to create your own, or use my top 50, and manually remove the ones you don't want.
dyar on Jan 03, 2008
You can see the current scores of the top 50 any time.
How come the top 50 are now the top 49?
soprano on Jan 03, 2008
I'm not sure. Tomorrow, look for a new leaderboard from me that doesn't have dead people.
elnitido52 on Jan 10, 2008
This one updates automatically even though it has dead people in it...
aaroncampbell on Jan 10, 2008
I fixed the problem with only seeing 49 people. My name harvester was still seeing otherbrian as a regular user, and putting him in the top 50. Then the script to display the users recognized that he was a chef and filtered him back out.
As for the dead users, I'm sending an E-Mail to the chefs now to ask again if they will reflect that somehow in the user's IB ID. If they will do that (or give me access some other way), I'll fix the script.
aaroncampbell on Jan 10, 2008
I guess that if a bunch of people asked them to do it, it might help. Here is what I sent:
As you know, I have a leaderboard up for your site <http: />. To reduce load on your system I use the IB IDs to pull the points for a user. The problem is that dead accounts still show a points total on their IB ID. Take a look at Ryuzaki <http: /> and his IB ID <http: />. If you could make a way for my script to tell if a user is "live" or "dead" it would be very helpful. You might be able to make their IB ID show zero points or get tagged as "This account is no longer active." You could even make a different way for me to access points totals if you'd like.
Thanks.

mcgurgu: Sometimes if IconBuffet is slow, some people get skipped. If that happens, it'll correct itself in a couple hours

aaroncampbell: I was referring to the top 50 on your site, but yeah, I figured ... lowest user having more than me kind of excluded me from the top 20 listed above.
Now the lowest one in your top 50 is 14k anyway (before it was 9k or so) so I wouldn't make that cut either.
Thanks for the response though!
thedudedean on Feb 23, 2008
With any luck I should be top 20 soon.
renbot on Feb 29, 2008
Whoa, what happened to the Top 20? A ton of people are missing...
soprano on Mar 01, 2008
@renbot: That's what happens when the site is slow.
heinzelman on Mar 02, 2008
site performance continues to well, suck, sorry chefs. Pack rat might be a drain on resources...
aaroncampbell on Mar 03, 2008
It was pretty bad before packrat.
elnitido52 on Mar 06, 2008
This Leaderboard blog is working properly...thanks Aaron...
soprano on Mar 06, 2008
@elnitido52: Mine was working fine, but I stopped it, because aaroncampbell's works fine, so there was no longer any need for mine.

Is PR hosted on OUR IB servers? Oh the HORROR!
aaroncampbell on Mar 12, 2008
I honestly don't think so gswd, but only the chefs would know for sure.
soprano on Mar 12, 2008
I have a hunch that PackRat is hosted on one of Joyent's accelerators.

soprano on May 03, 2008

thedudedean on May 03, 2008
