Icon Buffet new design is nice, social features need work
Since IconBuffet doesn't care for flames, I'll have to point to my true opinion about the new IconBuffet design here:
http://www.makeyougohmm.com/20070518/4508/
To summarize my questions, if they are going to go social, why can't other designers share their icon sets? What is the value of these tokens (nothing from what I see)?
We'll see if the social part of the new design only goes as far as "as long as you tell us how great we are."

You shouldn't assume the site is feature-complete.
TDavid on May 18, 2007
I didn't see the word beta in the logo. The web is never complete anyway, it's dynamic in nature.

To each their own I suppose. I like the site quite a lot, and it is evolving. But not everyone will like it. If they tried to please everyone we'd end up with a bland, unorganized, bloated, designed-by-committee mess.

What else am I going to blog about?
This is a bit of a misnomer (as the chefs have stated they like using with atypical words for common concepts). The blogs are actually nothing more than threads like any other forum. These threads are generated to create buzz about new sets, ask for sets, send sets, talk about common interests, etc. Y’know – typical forum stuff. Guess you don’t belong to any other online communities. Weird.
Just so it’s clear with Hmm readers, there are no invite or referral code links in this post for Icon Buffet.
Good to know you are not a hypocrite.
I could understand if you could create your own icons with flexible licensing and share into the Icon Buffet pool…
No one has said it isn’t being considered, either.
Seriously - there is only one actual question in that post. The one about blogging. What are your actual questions?
IB isn’t for everyone. Clearly, it isn’t for you. Oddly enough, the site seems to be having great success despite your perceived “valueless” offerings. Must mean the overwhelming majority do not agree with you. Lucky for Firewheel Design.
Thank you. Come again.

May I just say how INCREDIBLY WEB 2.0 that is?? Thank GOD there isn't a beta in IconBuffet's logo. SO tacky. (imho)

Your one of my favorite people Tamashii! I agree with your statements wholeheartedly. And for the IB team... <hug>

Firewheel spinning machine on fast cycle, is it?
Notice how all the people responding are VIPs, hmm indeed. Where are all the non-VIPs who didn't get haplessly suckered into paying $6/month to trade free saturated icons? LOL. Talk about icon nerds. I'm a nerd too, so don't get too up in arms, I'm just not a social networthless icon nerd.
As for you questioning if I belong to any social networking sites, duh, read like the first sentence. My primary question wasn't about these quasi-blogs, it's been asked several times what the value of the tokens was (including the post above)? Please do tell. Somebody. Anybody. Bueller?
Hoshichan on May 18, 2007
So because I paid for VIP status, my opinion is invalid? You must have a very high opinion of yourself, heh. I've used several of the icons here, some on client sites, and they're worth every penny of my being "haplessly suckered into $6/mo".
BlackBart on May 18, 2007
TDavid. I admire your stepping into the lions' den in this way. Unfortunately, those who have paid for VIP simply don't share your views on the quality of icons offered here and so do not feel suckered at all. Opinion on the quality of such things is purely subjective after all and it is not your money they are spending.
I don't think you will get a very balanced view of the merits of the system by posting here.

Dissenting opinions are fine, but this discussion isn't staying friendly.
aaroncampbell on May 18, 2007
They say money talks. It seems that in this case, those that spent it are talking :)
JBVisions on May 18, 2007
"haplessly suckered into paying $6 a month"
"saturated icons"
"Talk about icon nerds"
and what I believe is the real reason behind this......
"why can't other designers share their icon sets?"
What's the matter? Won't the chefs let you play in their yard?
Personally I find your comments insulting to both myself and all the other members on here who have not been "suckered" into anything. We are well aware there a bucketloads of the same icon sets floating around. It depends on what you want to use them for, if in fact you want to use them for anything.
For many on here it has little to do with the icons per se. It's the social interactivity, the collecting and trading.
If you're so uptight about the way that the guys here are running, what is after all their own site, then go set your own up, then you can dictate who does what.
jmnovak on May 18, 2007
Not clear to me what your actual question is. What value do tokens have? Obviously, none outside the site. It's just (currently) a mechanism to limit the trading so that you can't get all the icon sets at once. It sounds to me like you are just objecting that this isn't a simple repository of free icons, but instead you have to put some effort into getting the icons.
Basically, the chefs created a game around the icon sets. Think of the tokens the same as you would the money in Monopoly. Some folks like to play the game; and are willing to drop a few real $$ to help their play. Not really costing me more than going to the movies a few times, and I get more hours of entertainment than the movies, so it's worth it to me. Equally obviously, not everyone likes the game (not everyone likes Monopoly, either); so, if you don't like it, don't play. That's no reason to whine about how much you don't like it...
If you think there is a way to make the game more enjoyable to you, feel free to suggest it; the site is always evolving. I know that I've suggested the idea of outside submissions of icon sets as well, and I'm certain the chefs are thinking about how they might integrate that into the game...
