1492.... 1493.. whatever

Anyone else notice the date given in the new Oslo Oceanic set is a little off?? Atleast it still rhymes..

In fourteen hundred and ninety two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue,
In fourteen hundred and ninety three, Columbus sailed the deep blue sea;

Which of course means send your Oslo Oceanic requests to me!

Perhaps he liked it so much he went back for his holidays

zelda013 on Jun 26, 2007

funny, i thought the same thing. but maybe he was *still* sailing in 1493. after all, the only power he had was wind... and they don't mention *where* on the deep blue sea he was.

...and they didn't tend to have too good maps in those days either..."There they be dragons" ain't too descriptive! Oslo Oceanic is full of piratey goodness though isn't it? And I feel at this point I should also mention it's also available from me too. ;-)

January 4th, 1493 - Christopher Columbus leaves the New World to return to Spain. He reaches port in March.

Steax on Jun 26, 2007

Now it says 1493 only...

JBVisions on Jun 26, 2007

@ zelda

Columbus had wind!

Now that's something they don't tell you in the history books ;)

I'm glad to see that you people are on your historical toes! I swiped the 1493 line from an episode of Lost In Space in which Dr. Smith argues with Will Robinson over the date of Columbus' voyage. Dr. Smith, the cowardly yet pompous know-it-all, was insisting on 1493. Had Robby been around at the time of the disagreement he could have settled it, but I suppose he was engaged in some menial task the humans were too lazy to do.

@cdncx: Actually, I think the second line goes:

In fourteen hundred ninety three, again he sailed the deep blue sea

@etherbrian: I love the Oslo series. Absolutely love it!

SpamDog on Jun 26, 2007

@Brian.. I figured/hoped it was done on purpose.. I don't recall that episode of Lost in Space.. but then again I haven't seen them since I was a kid

@ JBVisions : clearly the historians are falling down on the job. after all, how else to inspire countless young minds to delve into the past if not with such (im)pertinent details ?

I learned "in 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue" in elementary school. So when I read the quote I had to google the phrase, interesting information.

SpamDog - Mr. Mom reference?

I just assumed some evil intellectual property rights group had made 1492™©® a legal hostage.
