Sign up referral question

If you post your link using one of the new icons and someone uses it they get brought to the sign up page.

If they click on one of the icon tags to have a look before signing up they get taken to another page. If they then hit the signup link on there, it doesn't seem to associate it with your account any more. Is it using cookies or something to log that visitor as your referral?

I think/hope so. Else it doesn't make much sense sending people to a login screen before they even know what they're signing up for.

My understanding is that the site doesn't drop cookies that would allow the visitor to view the site first then sign up, unless of course they go back to the original link to sign up. S/he has to use your link and immediately sign up. This has been discussed before so I don't know if any changes have been made since that discussion.

Mmm that could be a problem then. Most people aren't going to sign up without looking. Maybe there should be some small example sets on the sign-up page?

Or course just storing the ref in a $_SESSION, that would make it possible to send the user anywhere, to a set they might like for instance, and when they sign up..

Session Variables, Cookies, don't really care how it's done as long as we get the credit for the referral. :-)

From the IconBuffet ID announcement:

"Note that, as of right now, only the two "logo" styles (the second and third ID styles) will get you referrer credit. The others link to free deliveries or to your profile page, which don't support the referral logic yet. We know that you want to be able to link people to your profiles and get referrer credit for it, and we want to make that possible. But right now, if getting referrer credit is important, use the logo style IB IDs."

Yep, use those, it gets you to the sign up page, if you then navigate away from there to free deliveries, then click that sign up, you go to a different page without your referrer id.

Try it but you have to be logged out.
