I know what you mean. You got a good point there. If IB added those sample pages and tutorials, then it would have been more fun and fulfilling for you. I think they have some samples or tutorials in the blog forum, but there's no search feature. Unfortunately, you'll have to do it the dirty way via Google.
To fix your broken avatar, try saving you image as a GIF or PNG instead of a JPG and uploading again. That seems to work for others with the double dot problem. (If it doesn't work for you, please let me know)
