Blinksale: Easy, painless, online invoicing for small businesses

What this place needs...

...unless I'm missing something, is some sort of search function. I know the different icon sets come with tags attached, but if you're looking for something specific, unless you've already found something with that tag, you can't find something similar without first having found something with that tag, if that makes sense.

The current web project I'm working on involves an image map (I've discovered I hate image maps), and I'm looking specifically for icon sets with the following in them:

- flowers
- question mark/help symbol
- coffee cup (actually that one's sorted - I've got Marseilles Cafe which I think has something suitable)
- something signifying a shop, but not necessarily a shopping cart
- a key or something signifying security
- a car and a bus
- anything related to health care

Anyone got any suggestions for any of the above?

I've been looking at both the free and stock icons, but without some sort of search function for the tags (unless it's hiding somewhere and I've not found it yet), I'm having to resort to wading through looking at each icon set, which although I get to look at lots and lots of icons and wonder at their loveliness, and adding some to my "must have when I have tokens" list, is rather time consuming.

Btw, did I mention I hate image maps? ;-)

First: Go vote for your Top 5 features you would like to see in IB. Browse the descriptions of each request (linked via the request title), then go to the poll to vote (poll linked at the top of the thread).

You can also perform a pseudo search via the tags embedded in each set. Simply type in this URL: http://www.iconbuffet.com/tags/ and include the item you are looking for behind "tags/" such as "cars", "bus" or "key" or whatever.

Thanks Tamashii - you're a star! :-)

Off the top of my head, I know that Tokyo Mad Scientist has a needle, and Authentic Jobs has a coffee cup, but I'm not sure about any of the others...

And unrelated to IB, have you checked out Myfonts.com? Check out this set: http://www.myfonts.com/search?search%5Btext%5D=eclectic+web

I use a lot of those in my design projects...

A question for all the webmaestros here.. what are your best tips on adding a search function to an existing site? Not to drop hints to the chefs (well, not only for that).

depends on how your site works. Assuming it's run off a database, then you'll need to match a searched term to certain database fields, go over each row, collect the percentage/relevance, and list it in that order. It can be anywhere from very simple to very complex.

@cbest - thanks for the hint - I'll check that out.

Probably the easiest way to add a search to a site's to add a Google search, which is what I did on the first site I added a search to. There are various search scripts out there that are usually a case of copy and paste the code into the relevant place, and upload the required files to your server. Some are free (usually with ads), some paid. They vary in how accurate they are I found. There's a lovely one called Growsearch that's standards compliant - http://gr0w.com/amos/growsearch/ , but I had problems with it and the relevance, as it just wasn't picking up common phrases I knew were on the site. On another site I use Freefind, which is a hosted one - http://www.freefind.com/ - which is fairly easy to integrate into an existing template, and once it's in there you can just forget about it.

I use FastFind which is brilliant but I got it when it was free. Now they charge big bucks but the Chefs are rich so they can afford it, can't you guys ;-)
