IB Geek Girls
I'm a Pirate at heart, and my loyalty if pushed, is to The Pirates - arrrrr! (I only joined for the free rum)<hehe>
I am however also a girl geek, and damned proud of it too! It's time the boys realised that girl geeks are a force to be reckoned with, so if you're hot about HTML, exalt XHTML, like to do things with style with CSS, excel at XML, are potty about PHP, adore ASP, crave ColdFusion, jive with Java, and jig with javascript, rave about Ruby, adore AJAX, whatever your coding poison...if you're dotty about doctypes, advise accessibility, eulogise over usability...whether you're a WYSIWYG wizard, or a hard core hand coder....and you're a girlie (please note, boys wearing dresses will not be admitted ;-))...then join with me in the IB Geek Girls!
The IB Geek Girls little hideaway is here. (Confirmed IB Geek Girls also get access to the private Geek Girl area as well).
The fledgling IB Geek Girls' recommended reading list can be found here.
IB Geek Girls mini-site to follow shortly.

My computers are all named in words that end in 'ator'.
First was Procrastinator.
Then came Devistator (for killing Zerg... my fiance's computer).
Then Liberator... our first laptop, of course.
Then Edificator... my fiance decided to be a little more grown up.
Then my work computer... Orchestrator.

And yeap, crazy about PHP, X/HTML, CSS, and delving into JS/AJAX nowadays. ;)

I'm a hand coder, though I don't get past CSS2. I'm the webmaster for two institutes at a university, and for an architectural office and for my own private pursuits. I spend waaaaay too much time on my computers (all Macs).

I'm into web and graphics mostly with a whimsical background in a few other things, but I am creating an application right now to help me organize (invitations, schedules, budgets) for parties.
I love it when Geek Girls unite, we're such an interesting bunch!

I am a foul-mouth newsroom designer. I don't get to play with the cool toys the boys over at the web department do. We print people here are stuck on G3s and Quark 4.1, which crash frequently. At home I love my PC, minimal as it is, with Word and Adobe applications. I hate crashes if they ever occur and my mini fridge is next to a cat food box for the kitty, Naomi, that didn't come back.
FallenAngel on Jun 15, 2007
Sorry folks about my absence today - family stuff...*sigh* Been getting withdrawal symptoms - 19 hours away from my beloved Diva! Arrgghhhh!
Ah, the LIDE600F! Lovely bit of kit! Wouldn't be without mine now. :-) (It's called Bluey because my favourite colour's neon blue and it's got a nice little Canon badge on the top that shines a nice shade of blue in the right light). A mate of mine once said that naming your PC's the first sign of geekdom. My laptop's rather unimaginitively called Diva-ette (she really needs a better name).
A bit about me...I'm a hand coder - XHTML/CSS. I like accessible and compliant things, and at the moment I'm getting into PHP and playing with PHP/MySQL.
I first met up with JBVisions on a forum called Outfront - www.frontpagewebmaster.com, which is a nice friendly place. I also have my own little fledgling web forum, MasterWeb (though I'm thinking of changing the name and moving it onto one of my other sites when my current hosting deal ends on the grounds I've got too many domains all over the intraweb). It's been a bit quiet there lately (mainly cos I'm here all the time lol!) but the little band of natives on the whole are pretty friendly (though slightly crazy). We could meet there? I could set up a IB Geek Girls sub-forum if you like? Ooooops! Nearly forgot! It's here.

Ah, PHP loveliness! We're forced to use nasty nasty M$ Access at work (well, one of my jobs, the one I can't stand and am trying to escape from into more web stuff), and I hate it! Bit busy doing a server management course at the mo (yep, I'm slightly crazy), which is probably precisely what I should be working on at the moment, but I can't be bothered tonight, so I'm here instead <hehe>, but once that's out of the way, I'm intending to do some more playing about with db's and stuff.

I must recommend the Visual QuickPro PHP books by Larry Ullman. Those plus the PHP manual are *all* I ever read to learn PHP and I now am lucky enough to be occasionally referred to as 'PHP-goddess'.
Although, now that I'm advancing beyond my comfort zone in OOP with PHP, I could use some recommendations for super-advanced books. One I'm thinking of buying is Object-Oriented PHP: Concepts, Techniques, and Code because it has waffles on the cover. Anyone read it?

I can't remember if I read that one (or own it - need to go look), but ANYTHING with food on teh cover of a coding manual gets my thumbs up!

Okay, the Girl Geeks now have their own private little meeting room within our meeting place. It's visible only to IB Geek Girls and the global mods (who are non-IB geek girls anyway). Anyone who's already signed up there will find they're now in the IB Geek Girls membergroup, and thus have gained some cute little pink hearts under their name (spot the IB icons <hehe>) which was the most girlie thing I could come up with at short notice. This also gains you access to the private meeting room where fun and frivolity will commence some time in the near future. It's also the place where the Geek Girl exclusive goodie will be available later this weekend. Everyone who's there so far will be able to access that area. Anyone new signing up will have to wait til I alter their usergroup, but I check there regularly so I usually pick them up pretty quickly. Off now to check out next GG special...if I can remember where I put the damned bookmark....*sigh*
Btw, Geek Girls now have 33 members - yay! We doin' good! :D

Just a couple of warnings - if you've got speakers and they're switched on, switch 'em off, if you're prone to migraines, you're best putting on a pair of dark glasses before viewing my little masterpiece, and I should point out that the couple in question are both web designers themselves. And what do you get for a wedding gift for the web designer who has everything? i have to say that i am loving the music from your link FallenAngel!! i have a collection of about 1000 really bad midis, that i enjoy throughly! i'd love the link to those, please, please! Actually, [after taking a break to check my midi sites] i have not found the particular version of "Addicted to Love" that i am currently coveting. & would truly appreciate the link (*o*) !
OK … i would like to ask this esteemed collection of Geek Women if i might join your little knitting circle???
i am a Mac geek. i had the job of maintaining the Mac Lab at the local community college. i had about 20 computers to keep up with, as well as, assisting about 60 students per semester. i taught several seminars to other Mac geeks who were Graphically challenged, PhotoShop, FreeHand, PageMaker, & Quark. my first lecture was to fill in for the Professor that i worked for, due to his mother passing away. well, i felt so honored & i jumped right in making tutorials, etc. And … i realized that this first lecture was to be FOUR hours long & i had to have simple tutorials & lectures for FOUR softwares! Well … i figured i better have a piece of gum cuz my throat was really dry. i survived the first hour, everyone was so attentive, & then, we took a break. i went to the ladies room and when i glanced in the mirror, i noticed that i had a little blue line all the way around my mouth, from the gum! that's as bad as having toilet paper stuck on your shoe! [as a side bar, i did all of this stuff before i had my degree]
so … hope i am geeky enough for y'all. i always said that i didn't want to get into web design because i didn't want another addiction. i guess i'll have to get addicted to, yet another aspect of computers!
i do name my computers. My G4 is Lee*Gor is named for the two professors that gave me my first computer. the biggest difference is that the hard drive has five partitions. Lee*Gor, TsunaMi, Fred, iCons * os X, & oRion * os X. Then there is my 160GB external in 6 partitions: Harry * iCons, Gidge * iCons, pOetic aRss, jErry * wareHouse Icons, fOrmer * os X, & roRy & muSic. this one, a G3 iBook is suZan'x pUter & my newest, a PowerBook 180c is the original name of "Macintosh HD."
i await your decision =)

@debbye - no probs, just stick IB Geek Girls in your profile and you're in!
I think I've added everyone who signed up at our little meeting place overnight to the IB Geek Girls membergroup, so everyone should be able to get in. If I've missed anyone, drop me a PM there or a whisper here, and I'll add you in.
At the moment I'm investigating ways to maintain an IB Geek Girl's recommended books list. I'll report back when I find something useful.
FallenAngel on Jun 30, 2007
@debbye - I've just remembered you asked about the midis. I don't have specific page links for the individual files (the site was done in rather a hurry while I was simultaneously editing a book for them as well), and it was only at the end that I suddenly remembered that I'd not particularly paid much attention to where I'd got the sound files from. The links to the two sites I found them through though are on the credits page. I have a huge list of bookmarks though and one section's labelled "silly stuff, midis, wavs, and miscellaneous", so I'll have a look in there and see if I did bookmark the individual pages.

As for taking your PHP to the next level, I'd recommend reading Code Complete (for a language-generic primer on ratcheting up your code quality) and Pro PHP Security. Then start looking at books that focus on application design models. It doesn't have to be a PHP book. And, for a shameless plug, check out my PHP article on Zend: http://devzone.zend.com/node/view/id/763

Oy. In latest news. The "family computer" has a trojan problem. Guess who gets volunteered to fix it? Oh yes, it's me. I've lost count of the number of times I've explained that programmer is not the same as technician. I hate servicing PCs. Lynch the virus writers!! lol

I love technology, designing logos/websites, hand-coding and I'm currently a Service/Support Tech at an Apple reseller here in Canada. Sidenote: I've also got an original Gameboy, a black DS Lite, PSP, a Wii, and XBox 360. The last two I "share" with my boyfriend.

I know, I know! Tell us about your weirdest or most difficult client.
<< waiting with anticipation >>
FallenAngel on Jul 16, 2007
Without hesitation, that would have to be my 7 year old nephew and his demands for his site. Not really a client cos it was a freebie (I got paid in sweeties).
Also, just a brief update on the IB Geek Girls....the IBGG blog will shortly be unveiled to the eagerly waiting public, a "Stylish" userstyle called "IBGG Geek Girl Makeover" is in the pipeline (I'm working on it right now), and another competition's coming in a couple of weeks. Yay! More news shortly.....

well i finally cracked and am joining groups hand over fist (better late than never right ?), so here i am. plus this group has groupies (bonus !).
here's my little introductory anecdote : a friend of mine (musician) was showing me how to play a scale on a trumpet, and was stunned when i caught on after the first two notes. I said to him, "well, it's easy : it's just like binary."
does that make me geek enough ?
FallenAngel on Jul 16, 2007
And lo, access to the IBGG secret room was granted to JustG ;-)

JBVisions on Jul 17, 2007
As FA will tell you, asking me about difficult clients is not a good idea. I could write a book about the lot I've had. Like debbye, one story would have to be on a closed and locked forum as the client is "known".
Another just goes on and on and if it wasn't for the money I'd have ditched him long ago. Some of the requests just beggar belief and you can't explain to him. It has to be done his way even if you know it won't work. Now I just explain once, then do it and wait for him to twig.
He wanted a logo and it had to be in light blue. We went through a whole load of different designs before he finally agreed one. I put it on the site. A week later I get a request to change the site so the background is "corporate". I ask what he means by corporate (given there are only 2 in the company) and he says he wants the background the same colour as the logo so it's got "branding".
I point out this isn't going to work and that I'd need to change the logo colours. No, he wouldn't have it. Leave the logo alone just change the background. So I change the background.
Then he phones up complaining that he can't see the logo. Well duh!
louiemctool on Jul 17, 2007
hahahahahaha...
the only thing that irritates me more than dumb user requests is the knowledge that he/she/it probably make three times what i do...
:)

Perhaps a more productive tip. When starting in freelancing, you get a bunch of guys who try to get you work for cheap. They offer you an opportunity for ramping up / a chance to have something to show as an argument to get cheap fees.
Well, best is to stay away from these guys. You never ramp up. You do a good job at designing a prototype (what you have been paid for), you get excellent feedback from customers. But because the guy has done everything on the cheap, things never come to fruition. So, you worked doing something that you have no right to exploit yourself and that will never go public.
Best is to stand on your position. Either the guy is serious and ready to pay the amount that is required to get a good job done, either he is not. If he is not, then it would be a better use of your time building a nice website (or whatever) for a friend or a charity organisation, that you can use to boost your portfolio and give yourself more visibility.
Always that idea that you need to think about where you want to be in 3-5 years time and pave the way, engage in actions that will get you there and avoid what has all appearance of a big detour.
JBVisions on Jul 17, 2007
My absolute favourite was many years ago when I work for a US petrochem company and we were rolling out new equipment to all the dpeartments. I was asked by my boss to go round and find out what people wanted.
So I go trundling off, notepad in hand and arrive in the office of one of the senior managers. I asked him what he wanted and he tells me he wants a new computer but not to bother with a keyboard. Confused I questioned why he didn't want a keyboard and he said he was only going to be looking at data, he wouldn't actually be typing stuff in. :o∫

Software development process in images ;-).
JBVisions on Jul 17, 2007
And how true is that! Anyone who has done project management for a large corporate can draw that with their eyes shut. I used to have a sign on the wall that said:
The first 90% of ANY software project takes 90% of the estimated time, the remaining 10% takes the other 90%!
ZsaZsa on Jul 17, 2007
That is 110% true!
My favorite was a client who wanted to do a matchmaking site. We were discussing the interface and I was explaining how you could only have Men looking for women, women looking for men, men looking for men, and women looking for women. The client said there were more possibilities than that! She said "I want to leave it open ended - everybody looking for everybody!". I think she needed a more hip developer but I told her that would make too much work for the database engine.

ps. Also it didn't matter where they lived or what language they spoke.
