To celebrate the Pet Shop icon set, let's get a dogs vs. cats rivalry going.
Post Dogs in your reading column if you have a loveable, loyal, trainable best friend.
Post Cats if your cat allows you to exist in the same space and provide it meals.

From your post I'm guessing you have and like dogs most. :)
I don't have any pets, but I prefer dogs too. :)
robbyrice on May 17, 2007
Dogs are definitely friendlier and better to have around as pets.
JBVisions on May 17, 2007
Not when you have a houseful of cats. Dogs get very unfriendly then, especially when my little Oliver has his claws stuck in their nose.
etherbrian on May 17, 2007
You'll never hear anyone say, "That smells like a wet cat." Think about it.
Betty on May 17, 2007
Because the smell of the litter box permeating the house knocks out all other odors?

@Betty - good one!
at least a dog's "wind" is intermittent, whereas the "box" is continual!
snowraven on May 17, 2007
Betty, if you clean the litter box every now and then it doesn't smell bad. That terrible odor is coming from the expensive new rug/sofa/duvet the cat just peed on. ;-)

gswd, I know someone who has several cats and a dog. He once referred to those things which you don't want to speak of as "crunchy tootsie rolls."
Apologies to those who now cannot eat that candy anymore. (I never liked 'em much anyway.)
I vote cats. And I anxiously await the next big debate of "boxers vs. briefs."

So debbye's "wow" reminded me that it's difficult to convey tone well electronically. I was kidding, truly. I like dogs more than cats, but I'm an animal magnet and pretty much love 'em all (with the exception of bugs and stinging things). I especially love cats that think they're puppies, those are really fun.
Don't believe me? Meet Syd. =)

@justG : somehow i was expecting a photo of something vicious (arg ! what a terrible pun !!) but awww... i can see how you couldn't not take him home. i resisted for a long time (small apartment) but then i got played by a black cat with no conception of personal space (she was a lot bigger than yours though). and guess what, she was pregnant when i took her in, so now i have *two* hairy free-loaders to support (i kept one of the kittens). i must say, in spite of all their flaws (oh, the many flaws) they make it up in entertainment value. better than television, seriously.
(oh, and not that i necessarily want to get into any scatological discussions, but re : the litter box odor thing : my cats go in the toilets. problem solved.)

Dogs and cats are both great. Right now I have two of each. I was dog-less for 20 years while I had anywhere from two to six cats at a time. Cats are easier to have if you work long hours and don't have time for walking and training. Five years ago I was finally able to get a dog. I adore my cats, but no one shows you love the way a dog can.
Oh, and cats who act like dogs? Definitely my favorite! Dogs who sleep late and lie in the sun like cats come a close second.

I love dogs. A cat's independence is FAB when you're working long hours -- I've had 2 cats and I loved both. When they were gone I decided to get Maggie, my little Jack Russell Terrier. I'm going to take unconditional love and easy forgiveness over my sweet, independent, persickety, what the hell are you going to do about it, most beloved cats. I'm in the Dogs Guild :)

justg said: "So debbye's "wow" reminded me that it's difficult to convey tone well electronically."
Very true. In case anyone isn't clear, the tone of this rivalry is strictly in fun and all dissing should be considered tongue-in-cheek. We all love our pets, and they are all adorable in their own way.
And remember to spay/neuter them and support your local rescue/spca organizations.
That said--dogs still rule.
anti on May 19, 2007
That said--dogs still drule.
There, fixed that for you.
debbye on May 19, 2007
Yes … anti--dogs still RULE
i was "wowing" to say "good one." i know this is fun!
back in the day, when i started to get cats, my first was "mischief" (xmas present for me2orion). the 2nd was mistake, she had double paws & she thought she was a raccoon! & i joked that if i got another cat, it would be a mistake!!!
the neighbor kids knew i was the local animal shelter so they came to get me. "Mistake" was in an empty lot, his eyes weren't even open. Someone thru out their mistake!
when i had my farm, i had about 15 cats on my porch everyday, all balled up in a knot!! they'd scatter when i'd come out cuz they were all wild except for Mischief, Misfit, Mistake, & a couple more that were actually mine.
now, i like feeding birds & it's not fair to them.
justG on May 19, 2007
@debbye: Oh well that's all right then, I kinda thought you meant "wow... that was harsh," because it was, and it wasn't necessarily obvious that it was all in jest. =)
@gswd: Yeah, he was way cute, and so mischievous, a lot of fun. It's really unfortunate that my allergies prevented me from keeping him. However, I found him a good home, and spoiled him before he got there. I bathed him regularly, so he was very used to water; consequently when his new humans used a spray bottle to dissuade him from doing something, he just thought it was playtime. Awesome! *cackle* =]
debbye on May 19, 2007
yes, it was harsh, but i knew it was a joke.
i always seem to end up with a lot of critters that i find homes for. i found ohe a couple of years ago, a dog that was so matted, you coldn't tell boy or girl. she was so gentle, she let me clip her & found swollen titiies & knew she was "she" & pregnant. that's probably why she was abandoned on my street. she had 9 puppies the next day! i found homes for her & all the kids! i even paid for her spay so she wouldn't end up like that again.
now, it's just me & #1 dog. :-)

Dog's can't get stuck in trees. That definitely is a benefit. Than again, dogs don't fall properly off things, if they don't wear parachutes. So I guess a dog is a creature of anticipation, while cats are animals of solutions.

I just love both of this cuddly, furry animals.
But somehow cats are cooler. My analysis:
+ clean themselves
+ purr so sweet and tranquilizing
+ sleep a lot (I also like sleeping a lot ¦D)
+ hunt and eat stinging mosquitoes
+ are so handy and independent
- fill the litter pan...
- always have to rearrange the furnishing

I love my 3 cats. They are exceedingly fastidious (unlike their canine counterparts) and there is no litter box smell because the litter box is kept on the porch and cleaned daily.

P.S. Also cats don't need to grovel for human attention. They are much more content and self sufficient.

my dog never needs to grovel, she comes over to my chair, rests her head on my knee & exhales! That is confidence! we know our places in each other's hearts.

In primitive times, dogs wandered down the hillsides into the camps of early man. There they would hang around the campfires to be thrown tidbits of leftover food. At that time they became dependent on man for food and gave up there natural instinct to hunt.
Cats on the other hand looked down the hillside on the encampment of early man and would not become dependent on man, as canines had done. They continued hunting for food and only visited man either out of curiosity or the presence of a food supply.
Due to early man's living conditions, rodents abound. The cat (yet regaining its independence) found a new food source and was welcomed into the home as a working member of the household.
As time progressed into the Middle Ages cats saved the European Community from the Black Plague. Then with the rise of the middle class, cats became more valued as companions and have now risen to the most numerous pet.

ugh … & the line in the garden was drawn by the [unknown] cat, as he was burying his "deposits" in the nicely tilled & weeded soil.
& then … the [unknown] cat "marks" his territory & drowns out any aromas by any other animal … even the skunk.
& then … the [unknown] cat lies in wait to slaughter cute birdies @ the birdbath.
& then … the [unknown] cat leaves his wake & returns to his own "unwaked" home!

I think both cats and dogs have their place... I love both, only have cats right now, but I'm not home that much so it's for the best. They both have their good and bad points depending on your lifestyle and the individual dog or cat... each has its own unique personality and I can't say I can lump any of them into one solid category... sometimes my dog seemed to think he was a cat (since he lived with several) and I have a couple of cats that act very "dog like." They all manage to put up with me so why not return the favor?

I have four cats and four dogs (I know...sounds insane but everyone gets along pretty well) and, of course, I love them all. In my opinion, cats win for cleanliness despite the fact that I feel like a slave to the litter box most days. I feel like a turd farmer when I clean up my yard and I have to go searching for poo "landmines". At least with a box the mess is all in one place.

Catlovers DO NOT take this the wrong way but EVERY single househod with cats that I have every been in has reeked of cat feces, YES EVEN the "clean" people had smelly houses. Also, cats have a chemical in their dander that is addictive that is why America is plagued with cat ladies
debbye on Jun 14, 2007
@ChickAzul - very handsome!
now … i adore my dog, that's been established. But … it does not mean that i don't notice her shortcomings!
i just shut off the TV because she assaulted it, yet … again! whenever there is an "allergy product" or "depression meds" or even "sleep meds" ad on the BooB tOOb, my favorite idiot goes nuts. she knows the music for the intro into these ads & will race to the TV. it seems that so many commercials use pets in their ads, (i.e. - get a good night sleep, get up to jog with the dog! OR at least one person is allergic to a cat or dog, so they are depicted in all allergy commercials!) She will grumble & whine & groan & otherwise carry on a conversation with these four legged TV personalities. Of course, we don't need to discuss Pet Product Ads!
Now, it's insane enough that she talks to dogs & cats, but horses galloping across a field will get her to gallop towards the TV. She has yet to graze along side the "Happy Cows from California," but she tries to speak in cow language! This FOOL even gets in a tizzy over chickens & goldfish! sometimes, it is obvious that she is not at all happy to have these other animals in her house, but, other times she just wants to play & sniffs the TV expecting some odor other than the accumulated static dust on the screen!
America's Funniest Videos - now that show is a dog magnet! again, she knows the intro music & the sound of Tom Bergeron's voice is all she needs to hear. she'll sit & wait for any & all animal clips, even tho i don't think she finds them funny, she will try to join in. When Tom Bergeron first started doing Dancing With the Stars, his voice was all she needed to tune into this show as well. i even caught her trying to call in to vote for Mario Lopez, one time host of Pet Stars on Animal Planet!
There used to be an ad on TV with James Earl Jones as the spokesperson. The camera would show him at quite a distance away and then, suddenly, ZOOM in on his face. then, zoom out & ZOOM in again! (somewhat like Sesame Street, Near & Far!) all the time with the zooming, JEJones was speaking in his very deep voice. Now, my brain-drained dog has PTSD from this commercial. it does not matter the content, but when there is camera "ZOOMing." don't stand between the dog & the TV! Heaven help everyone if we come across James Earl Jones coming towards us while the dog & i are out & about!
So … all in all … the brain-drained dog & i will probably watch Dr DoLittle, again, this weekend. it would be the best … if she would make the popcorn! =)
me2orion on Jun 14, 2007
@ debbye - you forgot to mention that this is a second-hand brain-drained dog. she wasn't this insane when i had her. she liked her t.v., but not like that.
@ anyone else - she also had her stupid moments, pretending to be a cat. she would chase down the beam of light from a flashlight, the way a cat will. she even gave herself a bloody mouth because she would attack the ground, whether it was carpet or pavement.
she is a good source of entertainment sometimes. you can't mention the word "dog" around her without going nuts. she looks for it.
now my golden retriever is smart, in that she knows where she's going, even if she's only been there once or twice. she'll run around the jeep until she can get out. she's psychotic, like her sister. but she's not affected by the same things (or inflicted with the same weird behavior.)
Just think. if this is how debbye raises her dog and granddog, how did i turn out so well? :)

Dogs = loud, stupid poop machines that are all too happy to stick their sticky nose right into your crotch. disgusting. Pugs and Shibainus are cute, but I would never own a dog.
Cats = yowl at the most innoportune times of the day and night, claw you when they're pissy, and like to leave the worst smelling "presents" in the garden...right next to your prized vegetable that you were hoping to eat someday.

Love both, but preference goes to cats. Their ability to start the night sleeping on the bottom right corner of your bed and to finish it right in the middle of it (with you having been ruthlessly sent to sleep on the floor. Then he occasionally disappears for a fortnight (the cat had chosen us, settling in our basement before deciding of his full time adoption) and treat you with disdain and contempt when pleases him but he is always there when you feel low and you need company. Then the intensity of this intimate contact of his claws deep in your legs when you wear nothing but a very thin summer short. Sigh (all memories current apartment is "no pet allowed", unfortunately)

@tadams - my rottweiler literally headbutts the TV! for a while, i was using a 13" one near the computer, until she "butted" it onto the floor, literally. i decided it was better to have my 27" TV, barricaded with boxes so she cannot get at it.
but … yes, we do watch dog shows! actually, she watches the dog show & i watch her. i had never seen a pet "watch" TV until this one. & from what i understand, many animals don't see the image we do, they see all the dots that make up the image. i have rented & purchased movies that we can watch together.
i bought "Eight Below" last year. she got so upset watching it that i shut it off. i swear that the dog actors knew their "lines." Jerry was having a conversation with them [one sided of course] and she was upset that the dogs were lost. i have never seen anything like it!

one of the best toys i ever had for cats is a cheap fishing pole. you can tie on a bell and cast it into another room & reel in a mess of cats. as soon as my cats heard the bell, they'd come running from wherever to play. you can also let out about 5 feet of line & move the rod so the bell goes in circles around the cat. cat starts jumping & doing back flips, no catnip necessary! after a few minutes, my cats would be sitting on the floor panting just like a dog. H I L A R I O U S !
